Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4653

It is narrated from Abu Wa'il that Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and Abu Mas'ud al-Badri came to Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them) while he was mobilising the people (for battle). The two of them said to him: "Since you accepted Islam, we have not found any action of yours more disliked by us than your excessive haste in this matter." Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Since you two accepted Islam, I have not found any action of yours more disliked by me than your sluggishness in this matter." The narrator says: Then Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) clothed each of them in a garment and went out for the Friday prayer.
And as for the story of Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari keeping away from the pledge of allegiance (it is as follows):

Grading: (1) It is sahih, but the explicit statement here that it was Ammar who gave the two hullahs (suits of clothing) is an error (wahm).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because Badal bin al-Muhabbar narrated this report from Shu'bah in "al-Bukhari" (7102), and Hajjaj bin Muhammad al-A'war in "Ibn Asakir" (43/457), and neither of them tied it to the mention of Ammar. Although their narration too gives the impression that it was he (Ammar), because in their narration, after mentioning Ammar's conversation with Abu Musa and Abu Mas'ud, they said: "And he clothed each of them with a hullah." Likewise Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated it from Shu'bah, as in Ibn Abi Shaybah's narration in "al-Musannaf" (15/73 and 287). So their narrations require the pronoun to refer back to the nearest one mentioned, who is Ammar.
Important point: However, al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) mentioned in "Fath al-Bari" (23/118) that Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated this report from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, with the wording: "Then Abu Mas'ud stood up and sent a hullah to each of them." This is supported by the narration of al-A'mash from Shaqiq bin Salamah (who is Abu Wa'il himself) in "al-Bukhari" (7105), where he said: "Abu Mas'ud - and he was wealthy - said: Boy, bring two hullahs. So he gave one of them to Abu Musa and the other to Ammar, and said: Go to the Friday prayer in them." So he made it explicit that the one who gifted the two hullahs was in fact Abu Mas'ud, and this is what is correct. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: This (narration) will come later through the route of Badal bin al-Muhabbar from Shu'bah at number (6078).
