It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the banner to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Badr, when he was twenty years old.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

Grading: (1) It is sahih, but with the qualification of the banner of the Muhajirun, as will come. This chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin al-Mughirah al-Sukkari (Ibn Sinan). Salih bin Muhammad called him saduq, and al-Sulaymani criticised him, saying: "There is some concern about him." Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Siyar" (13/ 384): "He is indicating that he was a man of ra'y (one of Ahl al-Ra'y)"; and before al-Dhahabi, al-Khalili stated firmly in "al-Irshad" (2/ 652) that he held the views of the Kufans, so the people of Hamadhan turned away from him. We say: This is not counted as a disparagement.
Note / Clarification: Miqsam is Ibn Bujrah, the mawla of Ibn Abbas, and Mis'ar is Ibn Kidam.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (6/ 207), and via his route Ibn Asakir (42/ 71), narrated it from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in "al-Ahad wa-l-Mathani" (167), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1579), Ibn al-Maghazili in "Manaqib Ali" (413) and Ibn Asakir (42/ 71-72) via the route of Qays bin al-Rabi', from al-Hajjaj bin Artah, from al-Hakam bin Utaybah. It too is hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (12083) via the route of Hafs bin Ghiyath; al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (2/ 431), al-Tabarani (12084), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (5/ 142) and Ibn Asakir (20/ 249) via the route of Abu Malik al-Janbi; and al-Bazzar (1783) and Ibn Asakir (20/ 249) via the route of Ibrahim bin al-Zibriqan; all three from al-Hajjaj bin Artah, from al-Hakam bin Utaybah.
Note / Clarification: In these words: "The bearer of the banner of the Muhajirun (at Badr) was Ali bin Abi Talib, and the bearer of the banner of the Ansar was Sa'd bin Ubadah." This narration qualifies the unqualified narration of the author (al-Hakim) here and the unqualified narration of Qays bin al-Rabi' from al-Hajjaj.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (5356, 12101) and "al-Awsat" (5202), Abu al-Shaykh in "Akhlaq al-Nabi (peace and blessings be upon him)" (430), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3119) and Ibn Asakir (42/ 72) via the route of Abu Shaybah Ibrahim bin Uthman al-Absi, from al-Hakam bin Utaybah. Its wording is: "Ali was the bearer of the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Badr and in all the battles; the banner of the Muhajirun was with Ali and that of the Ansar with Sa'd bin Ubadah." Some added: "In all the engagements: the day of Badr, Uhud, Hunayn, al-Ahzab and the conquest of Makkah."
Grading: Abu Shaybah al-Absi is matruk al-hadith.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 3486) and al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/ 258), in mu'allaq form, narrated via the route of Uthman al-Jazari, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas: "The banner of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be with Ali, and the banner of the Ansar with Sa'd bin Ubadah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was often under the banner of the Ansar." In Ahmad it reads: from Miqsam, who said: "I only know it to be from Ibn Abbas."
Grading: Uthman al-Jazari has weakness.
