Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) This is how it occurs in our manuscripts. Its meaning is that the qualities of Ali are not confined to the number mentioned; rather he has other qualities too that are evident in his person. These four qualities alone were mentioned only because they are his greatest qualities.
Grading: (2) Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The attribution of Zakariyya bin Yahya in the chain as "al-Misri", and the naming of his shaykh as "al-Mufaddal bin Fadalah", occur only with the author (al-Hakim), and this appears to be an error. Muhammad bin Uthman bin Abi Shaybah is known to narrate from Zakariyya bin Yahya al-Kisa'i al-Kufi. Moreover, this report was narrated by Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Samurah al-Kufi, in Ibn Asakir (42/ 72, 73), from al-Mufaddal bin Salih al-Kufi; so al-Mufaddal bin Salih in place of al-Mufaddal bin Fadalah is correct. And the one known to narrate from Simak bin Harb al-Kufi is likewise al-Mufaddal bin Salih, not Ibn Fadalah. So these are three Kufans in sequence (Zakariyya al-Kisa'i, al-Mufaddal bin Salih and Simak bin Harb).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The origin of the error is most likely that Zakariyya bin Yahya al-Misri (Ibn Salih) has a narration from al-Mufaddal bin Fadalah in Muslim and others; so when "al-Misri" was mistakenly attached to Zakariyya bin Yahya, this required that his shaykh be al-Mufaddal bin Fadalah, and so "Ibn Salih" was changed to "Ibn Fadalah"; or else it was made to follow the familiar path (al-jaddah) from the outset. And Allah knows best.
Grading: If this is established, then Zakariyya bin Yahya al-Kisa'i and his shaykh al-Mufaddal bin Salih are both weak. As for al-Dhahabi's firm statement in "al-Talkhis" that this Zakariyya bin Yahya is "al-Waqqar al-Misri", we do not know his evidence for it. And Allah is the Granter of success.
Note / Clarification: Drawing attention to this was necessary because the outward appearance of the author's chain implies that all of its narrators are thiqah, so an explanation was needed. And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
Details of the narration: It is narrated from Ibn Abbas through another route that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ahmad (5/ 3542) and al-Tirmidhi (3734) narrated it via the route of Amr bin Maymun from Ibn Abbas. This route will come with the author at (4702) within a long hadith, but there the wording is: "the first to accept Islam". There is criticism of its chain, as will be explained; see its supporting reports there.
Details of the narration: As for the banner of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is narrated from Ibn Abbas through another route that the banner of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be with Ali, and the banner of the Ansar with Sa'd bin Ubadah. Ahmad (5/ 3486) and others narrated it, and its details will come in the following chain.
Reference / Source: And in the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (which will come with the author at 6241) it is stated that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the standard-bearer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his military expeditions.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is also established from the mursal narration of Ma'bad al-Juhani in Ibn Sa'd (3/ 23); see also what will come at (4716).
Important point: This is unqualified, like the author's narration, but it must be qualified as in the narration of Miqsam from Ibn Abbas: that Ali was the bearer of the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning the banner of the Muhajirun, and the bearer of the banner of the Ansar was Sa'd bin Ubadah. This is supported by the long hadith on the conquest of Makkah that Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/ 476) narrated from the mursal narration of Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman and Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, that the banner was with Sa'd bin Ubadah, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to his son Qays bin Sa'd when Sa'd made his well-known statement threatening Quraysh. Its chain is hasan as a mursal. It is also narrated through other routes; see the discussion of al-Hafiz in "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 505-506).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is supported by the narration of Tha'labah bin Abi Malik al-Qurazi in "Sahih al-Bukhari" (2974) that Qays bin Sa'd was the bearer of the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Hafiz said in "Fath al-Bari" (9/ 233): "That is, the banner specific to the Khazraj of the Ansar, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give the head of each tribe a banner under which they fought."
Note / Clarification: It will come after this that Ali had the banner on the day of Badr, and in some of its routes it is qualified that he had the banner of the Muhajirun.
Grading: As for Ali washing the body of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), this is established and sahih, as has passed at number (1355), and Ibn Sa'd mentioned it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (2/ 241-245) through several routes.
Grading: Likewise, Ali lowering the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) into the grave is sahih and established (as passed at number 1355), but Ali was not alone; rather that narration shows that al-Abbas and his son al-Fadl bin al-Abbas were with him.
Note / Clarification: The Day of al-Mihras means the Day of Uhud, as indicated by the hadith of Ibn Abbas (3201) (whose chain is hasan). It is authentically established that Ali was among those who stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on that day, for he brought the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) water from al-Mihras in his shield so that he could drink, as indicated by the hadith of al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (Ibn Hibban: 6979, hasan chain).
Note / Clarification: "Al-Mihras": a water place on Mount Uhud at the far end of the Uhud ravine, where rainwater collects in large and small hollows; al-Mihras is the name of those hollows.
