Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "Labid" (with lam).
Note / Clarification: (2) The word "khatan" (son-in-law) is found only in manuscript (S), and it is established in al-Bayhaqi's narration from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 159).
Grading: (3) Its chain is hasan because of Ahmad bin Mihran al-Asbahani and Abu Sidan Ubayd bin Tufayl; both are saduq and hasan in hadith. Al-Tabari graded this report sahih (Fath al-Bari: 15/ 351), and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi said in "al-Mukhtarah" (1/ 337): "There is no harm in its chain."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 159), and via his route Ibn Asakir (39/ 36), from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Abd al-Baqi (the judge of al-Maristan) narrated it in his "Mashyakhah" (181), as did Ibn Asakir (39/ 36) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (337), through several routes from Ubaydullah bin Musa, in the same way.
Important point: It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (4005) from Abdullah bin Umar that it was Umar bin al-Khattab himself who offered Hafsah [in marriage] to Uthman, not as occurs in the narration of Rib'i bin Hirash that Uthman asked for her and Umar turned him down. However, al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Dala'il" (3/ 159): It is possible that Uthman first proposed and Umar turned him down, then Umar changed his mind and offered her to him, and Uthman said, "I will consider my affair", and then, when he sensed what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wished to do, he gave the reply that he gave. And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz said something similar in "Fath al-Bari" (15/ 351-352), and added: The reason for turning him down may have come from her side, namely that she did not wish to marry so soon after her husband's death, or it may have been some other reason that involved no slight to Uthman. Then, when the reason was removed, Umar offered her to Uthman out of regard for his feelings; and perhaps Uthman too had learned, as Abu Bakr had, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned her, so he too kept it secret and replied to Umar graciously.
