Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4617

It is narrated from Kinanah al-Adawi; he said: I was among those who were besieging Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I asked: "Did Muhammad bin Abi Bakr kill him?" He said: "No; rather a man from the people of Egypt, Jabalah bin al-Ayham, killed him." The narrator says: And it is said that Qutayrah al-Sakuni killed him, and he was killed on the spot; and it is also said that Kinanah bin Bishr al-Tujibi killed him; and perhaps they all took part together in his killing, may Allah curse them. And al-Walid bin Uqbah said these verses (about it): "Behold! The best of people after their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the one whom that Tujibi who came from Egypt martyred." Here "the Tujibi" means the killer of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In this narration Kinanah is given the nisbah "al-Adawi", whereas all those who narrated this report called him only "Kinanah, the mawla of Safiyyah", adding nothing more and not mentioning his nisbah.

Grading: (2) Its chain is hasan, like the previous one.
Note / Clarification: Kinanah is the mawla of Safiyyah, and Muhammad bin Talhah is Ibn Musarrif.
Reference / Source: Ibn Rahwayh (2088) narrated it from Abu Amir al-Aqadi; Umar bin Shabbah (4/ 1298), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah: 257) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 407) via the route of Asad bin Musa; Abu Nu'aym (254) via the route of Muhammad bin Bakkar; and Abu Nu'aym (257) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 407) via the route of Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin al-Zubayr al-Asadi; all four from Muhammad bin Talhah, from Kinanah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/ 79) and al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 237), in mu'allaq form, narrated it from Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Yunus, from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Kinanah, and he gave his name as "Jabalah", just like that, without mentioning his father.
Reference / Source: Khalifah bin Khayyat (page 175), and via his route Ibn Asakir (39/ 408), narrated it from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Muhammad bin Talhah, from Kinanah, and he named him "Himar". This narration is shadh, or perhaps this was a nickname of Jabalah.

Note / Clarification: (3) In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "Kabirah", which is wrong; we corrected it from al-Daraqutni's "al-Mu'talif wa-l-Mukhtalif" (4/ 1912).
