Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4616

It is narrated from Husayn al-Harithi; he said: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) in his illness, while some people were present there. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sit calmly and keep quiet; by Allah! Whatever you ask me about, I will (surely) tell you." Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah, did you kill Uthman?" At this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) lowered his head for a while, then said: "By the One who split the seed and created the soul, I neither killed him nor ordered his killing."

Grading: (2) This report is hasan. There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, but Husayn al-Harithi (Ibn Abd al-Rahman) did not hear it from Ali bin Abi Talib; rather it was Sariyyah bint Zayd bin Arqam who told him the story, as more than one narrator reported from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad (392), Ahmad (al-'Ilal: 307), al-Khatib (al-Muttafiq wa-l-Muftariq: 410) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 454-455) narrated it via the route of Yahya bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi Ghaniyyah, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 208) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bishr, Umar bin Shabbah (4/ 1262) from Yazid bin Harun, and Ibn Asakir (39/ 454) via the route of Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari; all three from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Husayn bin Abd al-Rahman, from Sariyyah bint Zayd bin Arqam, who said: Ali came to visit Zayd bin Arqam in his illness …
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the report of Qays bin Ubad from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which has already passed at number (4577) with a hasan chain.
Important point: It is authentically established from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through multiple routes that he declared himself free of Uthman's blood, as Ibn Kathir and others have pointed out.
