Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4615

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): what was engraved on the stone of his ring? He said: Because of the sincerity of his intention, these words were inscribed on the stone of his ring: 'Allahumma ahyini sa'idan wa amitni shahidan' (O Allah, grant me a life of felicity and grant me the death of a martyr). So by Allah! He lived with felicity and died the death of a martyr.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan) because of Sulayman bin Dawud al-Shadhakuni; he is matruk al-hadith, and some accused him.
Important point: The correct account is that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had the ring of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), engraved with "Muhammad Rasul Allah"; Abu Bakr and then Umar had worn it before him. Then it fell from him into a well, so he had another ring made and had "Muhammad Rasul Allah" engraved on it as well.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4220) and al-Nasa'i (9478) narrated it via the route of al-Mughirah bin Ziyad al-Mawsili, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, and its chain is hasan. Its basis is in the "Sahihayn", but without mention of the making of another ring, and through a route other than that of al-Mughirah bin Ziyad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (39/ 209) narrated, with a chain in which there is no harm, from Amr bin Uthman bin Affan, who said: The engraving on Uthman's ring was: "Amantu bi-lladhi khalaqa fa-sawwa" (I believe in the One who created and proportioned). Ibn Rajab stated firmly in "Ahkam al-Khawatim" (page 100) that this was the engraving of the new ring that Uthman had made after the Prophet's ring fell into the well.
