حَدَّثَنَا أبو بكر بن أبي دارِم، حَدَّثَنَا الحسين بن أبي الأحوص الثَّقَفي، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن إسحاق البَلْخي، حَدَّثَنَا عبد الرحمن بن مَغْراء، عن مُجالِد، عن الشَّعْبِي، قال: ما سمعتُ من مَراثي عثمان شيئًا أحسنَ من قول كعب بن مالك: فكَفَّ يدَيه ثم أغلَقَ بابَهُ … وأيقَنَ أنَّ الله ليس بغَافلِ وقال لأهل الدار: لا تَقتُلوهُمُ … عفا اللهُ عن كلِّ امرئ لم يُقاتِلِ فكيف رأيتَ الله صَبَّ عليهمُ ال … عَداوةَ والبغضاءَ بعد التَّواصُلِ وكيفَ رأيتَ الخيرَ أدبرَ بعدَه … عن الناسِ إدْبارَ الرِّياحِ الحوافِلِ (4)

It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him); he said: Among the verses of mourning composed for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), I have not heard anything better than these verses of Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): "So he withheld his hands and shut his door, and he was certain that Allah is not unaware. And he said to the people of his house: Do not kill them; may Allah pardon every man who did not fight. So you saw how Allah poured enmity and hatred among them after their close ties, and you saw how, after him, good turned its back on the people just as the swift winds turn their backs."

(4) إسناده ضعيف جدًّا، محمد بن إسحاق البَلْخي مُتهم بالكذب مع وصفه بالحفظ، وابنُ أبي دارم على وصفه بالحفظ أيضًا ليس بعمدة، فقد قال عنه المصنّف نفسه: غير ثقة، لكن ينفرد به ابن أبي دارم، بل توبع، فيبقى الشأنُ في محمد بن إسحاق البَلْخي، ومُجالدٌ - وهو ابن سعيد - ليس بالقوي. وقد نُسبت الأبيات المذكورة لحسان بن ثابت أيضًا، وبعضهم نسبها للمغيرة بن الأخنس، وقيل: للوليد بن عُقبة بن أبي مُعيط.
Grading: (4) Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Balkhi is accused of lying despite being described as a hafiz. Ibn Abi Darim, too, despite being described as a hafiz, is not reliable; the author (al-Hakim) himself called him "not thiqah". But he is not alone in it; rather he was corroborated, so the matter comes down to Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Balkhi. And Mujalid (Ibn Sa'id) is not strong either. The verses mentioned have also been attributed to Hassan bin Thabit, al-Mughirah bin al-Akhnas and al-Walid bin Uqbah.
وأخرجه ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 39/ 537 من طريق القاسم بن محمد الدلال، عن محمد بن إسحاق البَلْخي، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (39/ 537) narrated it via the route of al-Qasim bin Muhammad al-Dallal, from Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Balkhi, with this same chain.
