It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) bought Paradise from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) twice: once when he (peace and blessings be upon him) (encouraged the purchase of the well of) Bi'r Ma'unah, and the second time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) equipped the Army of Hardship (Jaysh al-Usrah).
This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In "Lisan al-Arab" and "Taj al-Arus", Ibn al-A'rabi is quoted as saying: "ba'ahu bay' al-khalaq", but he did not explain it.

Note / Clarification: (2) The original manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" have "Bi'r Ma'unah", which is an error; most likely it comes from Muhammad bin Mandah al-Asbahani, who has been criticised. Trustworthy narrators narrated it from Bakr as "Bi'r Rumah", and that is correct.

Grading: (3) Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Hatim said about Muhammad bin Mandah: "In my view he was not truthful … He narrated from Bakr bin Bakkar and al-Husayn bin Hafs, though he was not of an age to have met them." We say: He is not alone in it; trustworthy narrators corroborated him. But Bakr bin Bakkar and Isa bin al-Musayyib al-Bajali are disputed and closer to weakness; a solitary narration by the likes of them cannot be accepted, and they are alone in this report, as Ibn Adi said.
Note / Clarification: Abu Zur'ah is Ibn Amr bin Jarir bin Abdullah al-Bajali.
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (2/ 31), and via his route Ibn Asakir (39/ 72), via the route of al-Hasan bin Ali al-Hulwani; Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 58) via the route of Ibrahim bin Sa'dan; and Ibn Asakir (39/ 73) via the route of Muhammad bin Abd al-Malik al-Daqiqi; all three from Bakr bin Bakkar, with this same chain.
Important point: What is well known about Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is that he bought the well of Rumah, not that he dug it, as in his own hadith in al-Tirmidhi (3703), Abdullah bin Ahmad (1/ 555), al-Nasa'i (6402, 6403) and Ibn Hibban (6919). Ibn Battal said in "Sharh al-Bukhari" (8/ 204): "This is what the historians and biographers have transmitted."
Note / Clarification: Ibn Battal said this in comment on al-Bukhari's mu'allaq narration from his shaykh Abdan, from his father, from Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from Uthman, that when he was besieged he said: "I adjure you by Allah, and I adjure none but the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Whoever digs Rumah will have Paradise', and I dug it? Do you not know that he said, 'Whoever equips the Army of Hardship will have Paradise', and I equipped it?" He said: So they confirmed what he said.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this route from Uthman there is agreement with the narration of the author (al-Hakim) here, in mentioning "digging" rather than buying. Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) refuted Ibn Battal with a narration of Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in which "a spring" ('ayn) is mentioned in place of "a well". Al-Hafiz said: "An error is not necessarily the case; if it was at first a spring, there is nothing to prevent Uthman from having dug a well in it. Perhaps the spring flowed into a well, and he widened it and lined it with stone, so the digging was attributed to him."
