Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4594

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Uthman! Indeed Allah Almighty will clothe you in a shirt (the caliphate), so if the hypocrites want to force you to take it off, do not take it off at all."
This hadith has a sahih chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, but this chain is da'if (weak) due to the weakness of al-Faraj bin Fadalah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also disagreement over its chain, as explained in Musnad Ahmad (41/ 24466). Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir narrated it from him, from Rabi'ah bin Yazid, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, from Aishah. This is the more correct version, because al-Walid bin Sulayman and Mu'awiyah bin Salih (in the narration of most of those who report from him) narrated it from Rabi'ah bin Yazid, from Abdullah bin Amir al-Yahsubi, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, from Aishah. So al-Faraj agreed with them, except that he dropped "Abdullah bin Amir" from his chain. However, this hadith is authentically established from Urwah bin al-Zubayr from Aishah, but via the route of "Hisham bin Urwah from his father".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24466) narrated it from Musa bin Dawud with this same chain; and Ibn Majah (112) via the route of Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, from al-Faraj bin Fadalah, from Rabi'ah bin Yazid al-Dimashqi, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24566) narrated it via the route of al-Walid bin Sulayman al-Qurashi; and al-Tirmidhi (3705) via the route of al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from Rabi'ah bin Yazid; both of them from Abdullah bin Amir, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, from Aishah. Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/ 25162) narrated it from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from Rabi'ah bin Yazid, from Abdullah bin Abi Qays, from al-Nu'man bin Bashir, from Aishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In his narration from Mu'awiyah, Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi named the shaykh of Rabi'ah bin Yazid as "Abdullah bin Abi Qays". Likewise Zayd bin al-Hubab narrated it from Mu'awiyah bin Salih in Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 48-49, 15/ 201), except that he called him "Ibn Qays" (dropping the word "Abi").
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, a group corroborated al-Layth bin Sa'd in his narration from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, among them Asad bin Musa (al-Tahawi: 5311, al-Tabarani: 1934), Muhammad bin Ja'far (Ibn Abi Asim: al-Sunnah 1173) and Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth (al-Tahawi: 5311, al-Tabarani: 1934). Likewise al-Walid bin Sulayman narrated it from Rabi'ah, as has already passed. All of them named the shaykh of Rabi'ah as "Abdullah bin Amir", so this is the more correct version, as al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (3442).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tahawi (5310), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1784), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (3751), Ibn Battah (8/ 80), al-Lalaka'i (2569) and Ibn Asakir (39/ 284, 291) via the route of al-Minhal bin Bahr, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from Aishah.
Grading: Its chain is strong, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Minhal was declared thiqah by Abu Hatim al-Razi and Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, Ibn Adi considered him weak, and al-Uqayli said: "There is some concern about his hadith."
