Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) The hadith is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" in the context of corroborating chains and supporting reports, because of Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi, and he has been corroborated.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Sahlah (the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan) is a senior Successor; a senior mukhadram Successor narrated from him, al-Ijli declared him trustworthy, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi declared this report of his sahih. This report has been narrated similarly through several routes, as in the next chain with the author (al-Hakim).
Details of the narration: Uthman's statement on the Day of the House (yawm al-dar) is in fact a narration of Abu Sahlah from Uthman; it does not mention A'ishah, as the narration of those other than Yahya al-Qattan makes clear, although the narration of Yahya al-Qattan also points to this.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (40/24253) recorded it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A group agreed with Yahya al-Qattan in this narration, among them Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir (Musnad Ishaq bin Rahawayh: 1776), Sufyan bin Uyaynah (al-Humaydi: 268) and Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah (Ibn Sa'd: 3/63; Ibn Abi Shaybah: 12/45; and others).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Waki' differed from them, for he narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Qays bin Abi Hazim, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her); he mentioned the story of Uthman with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and made Uthman's statement on the Day of the House a narration of "Qays, from Abu Sahlah, from Uthman".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/407, 501 and 42/25797), Ibn Majah (113), al-Tirmidhi (3711) and Ibn Hibban (6918) recorded it via him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the story of Uthman with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Waki' did not mention Abu Sahlah, the freed slave of Uthman, and made it a direct narration of "Qays from A'ishah". The version relied upon is that of al-Qattan and those who agreed with him.
Important point: As for Uthman's statement on the Day of the House, the correct view is that Abu Sahlah heard it from Uthman, as the narration of Waki', Abu Usamah and others indicates.
Important point: However, the meaning of Uthman's aforementioned statement is authentically established from A'ishah, as will come in the next narration, and (it is established) that she heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say it to Uthman; and in it is an explanation of Uthman's statement here.
