Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4549

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the earlier nations there used to be people who were spoken to (from the unseen) (that is, they received inspiration); so if there is anyone like that in my Ummah, it is Umar bin al-Khattab."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is rated strong on account of Ubayd bin Abd al-Wahid and Ibn Ajlan (Muhammad bin Ajlan), and both of them have been corroborated.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Abi Maryam is Sa'id bin al-Hakam, and Yahya bin Ayyub is Yahya al-Misri.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2398), al-Tirmidhi (3693) and al-Nasa'i (8065) recorded it from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (40/24285) recorded it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, and Muslim (2398) and Ibn Hibban (6894) via Sufyan bin Uyaynah; both of them (Yahya and Sufyan) narrate it from Ibn Ajlan in the same way.
Reference / Source: Muslim also recorded it via Abd Allah bin Wahb, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from his father Sa'd bin Ibrahim, with the same chain.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Wahb said at the end of the hadith: The explanation of "muhaddathun" is "mulhamun" (those who receive inspiration).
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it (3469) from Abd al-Aziz bin Abd Allah, and (3689) from Yahya bin Qaza'ah, both from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from his father, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Bukhari also narrated it in mu'allaq form from Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, from Sa'd bin Ibrahim, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus these narrators made it part of the Musnad of Abu Hurayrah, not the Musnad of A'ishah. Abu Mas'ud al-Dimashqi said (as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted from him in "Fath al-Bari" 11/96): It is as though Abu Salamah heard this hadith from both A'ishah and Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) said: This hadith has a basis in the hadith of A'ishah, which Ibn Sa'd recorded via "Ibn Abi Atiq from A'ishah".
Reference / Source: We say: This narration is with Ibn Sa'd (2/290), Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Sunnah" (1262), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (9137), Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in his additions to Ahmad bin Hanbal's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (518) and Ibn Asakir (44/95), via two routes from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from Ibn Abi Atiq, from his father, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Details of the narration: Its wording is: "There has never been a Prophet but that in his community there were one or two 'mu'allam' (taught, i.e. inspired) people, and if there is any one of them in my community, it is Umar bin al-Khattab. Truly, the truth is upon the tongue and heart of Umar."
Note / Clarification: "Mu'allam" means a person who is inspired with what is right and good, so it has the same meaning as "muhaddath".
