حَدَّثَنَا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حَدَّثَنَا العباس بن محمد الدُّوري، حَدَّثَنَا أحمد بن يونس، حَدَّثَنَا أبو شِهاب، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن واسِع، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن أبي الدرداء، قال: خطب رسول الله خُطبة خَفِيفةً، فلما فَرَغَ مِن خُطبتِه قال: "يا أبا بكر، قُمْ فاخطُبْ"، فقام أبو بكر فخطب، فقصَّر دُون النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فلما فرغ أبو بكر من خُطبته، قال: "يا عمرُ، قُمْ فاخطُبْ"، فقام عمر فقصَّر دون النَّبِيّ ﷺ ودون أبي بكر (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a short sermon. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, stand up and deliver a sermon." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and delivered a sermon that was shorter than the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he finished, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar, stand up and deliver a sermon." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, and he too delivered a sermon that was shorter even than the sermons of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف لانقطاعه، فإن سعيد بن جُبَير لم يدرك أبا الدرداء كما قال ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 33/ 122 وبه أعلّه الذهبي في "تلخيصه".
Grading: Its chain is weak because it is munqati' (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For Sa'id bin Jubayr did not live in the time of Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), as Ibn Asakir stated in "Tarikh Dimashq" (33/122), and al-Dhahabi also declared it defective (ma'lul) for this reason in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
وقد روى هذا الخبر عليُّ بن محمد بن سعيد الثقفي، عن أحمد بن يونس - وهو أحمد بن عبد الله بن يونس - عن أبي شهاب - وهو عبد ربه بن نافع الحَنّاط - عن محتسب بن عبد الرحمن البصري، عن محمد بن واسع، عن ابن جبير، عن أبي الدرداء. أخرجه أبو نُعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (4482)، ومن طريقه ابن عساكر 33/ 121. فزاد علي بن محمد الثقفي فيه بين أبي شهاب ومحمد بن واسعٍ محتسبًا البصري الأعمى. وعلي بن محمد الثقفي هذا ليس بذاك المشهور في الرواية، ذكره أبو الشيخ وأبو نعيم في محدِّثي أصبهان.
Details of the narration: This report was narrated by Ali bin Muhammad bin Sa'id al-Thaqafi, from Ahmad bin Yunus (who is Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Yunus), from Abu Shihab (Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Hannat), from Muhtasib bin Abd al-Rahman al-Basri, from Muhammad bin Wasi', from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Abu al-Darda'.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (4482), and via him Ibn Asakir (33/121).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus Ali bin Muhammad al-Thaqafi added "Muhtasib al-Basri al-A'ma" in it between Abu Shihab and Muhammad bin Wasi'. And this Ali bin Muhammad al-Thaqafi is not particularly well known in narration; Abu al-Shaykh and Abu Nu'aym mentioned him among the hadith scholars of Isfahan.
لكن رواه محمد بن جعفر الوَرْكاني - وهو ثقة - عند ابن عساكر 33/ 121 - 122 عن أبي شهاب، عن محتسب الأعمى أيضًا، عن محمد بن واسع، به.
Details of the narration: But Muhammad bin Ja'far al-Warkani (who is a trustworthy narrator) narrated it, with Ibn Asakir (33/121-122), from Abu Shihab, likewise from Muhtasib al-A'ma, from Muhammad bin Wasi', with the same chain.
فإن كان ذكرُ محتسب فيه محفوظًا، فإن محتسبًا هذا ذكره ابن أبي حاتم في "الجرح والتعديل" 8/ 439 ولم يذكر فيه جرحًا ولا تعديلًا، وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، إِلَّا أَنَّ الذهبي ليَّنه في "ميزان الاعتدال"، وذكر في "ديوان الضعفاء" أن له مناكير.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): If the mention of "Muhtasib" in this chain is preserved (correct), then this Muhtasib was mentioned by Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (8/439) without any criticism or commendation, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". However, al-Dhahabi described him as soft (weak) in "Mizan al-I'tidal", and mentioned in "Diwan al-Du'afa'" that he has munkar reports.
