It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most God-fearing of us towards his Lord and the best reciter (and most learned) of us in the Book of Allah (the Qur'an).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Mis'ar is Mis'ar bin Kidam. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (8802) from Bishr bin Musa, with this chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But in the printed edition "Abd al-Malik bin Maysarah" is written instead of "Abd al-Malik bin Umayr", which is an error, since more than one narrator narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/26), al-Tabarani (8803) and Ibn Asakir (44/374) recorded it via Za'idah bin Qudamah; Abu Nu'aym in "Tathbit al-Imamah" (77) via Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid; and Ibn Asakir (44/373-374) via Ubayd Allah bin Amr al-Raqqi. All three narrate it from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr in the same way. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that in the narration of Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, "Abd Allah bin Umar" occurs instead of "Abd Allah bin Mas'ud", and apparently this comes from one of the narrators below Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid. Details of the narration: These three added in their narration: "He was the most knowledgeable of us about Allah", and Za'idah and Ubayd Allah said (differing in wording) "the one of us with the deepest understanding of the religion of Allah" instead of "the most God-fearing of us towards the Lord".
