Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading / Narrator: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), but it contains a narrator "Abidah" (bin Amr al-Salmani). Although he accepted Islam in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), at the time of the Conquest of Makkah, he did not emigrate to him. He emigrated in the time of Umar bin al-Khattab, as Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi said.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Since he came to Madinah late, it was not possible for him to witness directly the incident of "al-Aqra' bin Habis" and "Uyaynah bin Hisn" with Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the two of them asked Abu Bakr to grant them land and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rejected it in Abu Bakr's presence.
Examination of the connection: It is possible that Abidah heard this incident from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), since Abidah's hearing from Umar is established and he memorised matters of fiqh from him. Indeed, Umar himself asked Abidah about an issue, which Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned in "al-Musannaf" (3/309) with a chain in which there is no harm. Therefore Ali bin al-Madini's verdict (quoted by Ibn Kathir in Musnad al-Faruq 1/384) that "the chain is disconnected because Abidah did not meet Umar and it is not reported that he heard from him" cannot be accepted. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, in Abidah's biography in "Tarikh Baghdad" (12/422), stated with certainty that he heard from Umar.
Note: In any case, Abidah did not explicitly state that he heard this report from Umar; rather, he narrated it in a form indicating irsal. But the mursal reports of an eminent narrator like Abidah al-Salmani are accepted. That is why al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "al-Isabah" (1/102), expressed certainty about the authenticity of this chain despite quoting Ali bin al-Madini's statement.
Reference / Source: This narration was narrated by Ali bin al-Madini (as in Ibn Kathir's Musnad al-Faruq: 242) from Yahya bin Adam; by Ibn Abi Shaybah in his "Musnad" (as in al-Busiri's Ithaf al-Khiyarah: 4252); by Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (6/1822) from Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj; and by Ya'qub bin Sufyan (as in al-Isabah: 1/102). Via Ya'qub, al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/20), al-Khatib in "al-Jami' li-Akhlaq al-Rawi" (1623) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (9/195) narrated it from Harun bin Ishaq al-Hamdani. All four of these narrators (Yahya, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Sa'id and Harun) narrate it from Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi with this same chain.
Technical note / Correction: Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj (mistakenly) gave the name of Ibn Sirin as "Anas" (bin Sirin), whereas he is his brother "Muhammad" (bin Sirin), as Yahya bin Adam and Muhammad bin al-Ala' (in the next reference) named him "Muhammad". In fact, it is Muhammad bin Sirin who is well known for narrating from Abidah, whereas no narration at all is known from his brother Anas from Abidah.
Reference / Source: This incident of requesting a land grant (istiqta') (without the address "O caliph of the Messenger") was narrated by al-Bukhari in his "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/443) (al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar also attributed it in al-Isabah to al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh al-Saghir) with the chain Muhammad bin al-Ala' > Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi > al-Hajjaj bin Abi Uthman al-Sawwaf > Muhammad bin Sirin > Abidah.
Technical note / Correction: Here the narrator's name is given as "al-Hajjaj bin Abi Uthman al-Sawwaf", whereas all the other narrators from al-Muharibi named him "Hajjaj bin Dinar", and that is correct.
