Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4512

It is narrated from Murrah al-Tayyib; he said: Abu Sufyan bin Harb came to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "What is the matter that this affair (the caliphate) has gone to the smallest and weakest clan of Quraysh (meaning Abu Bakr)? By Allah, if I wished, I would fill this place against him with horses and men." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Sufyan, for a long time you have been hostile to Islam and its people, yet that has not harmed Islam in the least. Indeed, we have found Abu Bakr worthy of it (the caliphate)."

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because it is mursal and because of idtirab (inconsistency).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Murrah al-Tayyib (Murrah bin Sharahil al-Hamdani) was not present at this incident. Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah judged his narration from Umar bin al-Khattab to be mursal, so all the more so he would not have met Abu Bakr al-Siddiq or witnessed this exchange between Abu Sufyan and Ali. Despite this, al-Dhahabi declared its chain sahih in al-Talkhis!
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sahl bin Yusuf al-Anmati (thiqah) narrated it (in Abu Nu'aym: Fada'il al-Khulafa' 191) via Malik bin Mighwal > Abu al-Sha'tha' al-Kindi > Murrah > Abu al-Abjar al-Akbar. This confirms that the author's narration is mursal, and this Abu al-Abjar is "majhul" (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Abu al-Sha'tha' al-Kindi (Yazid bin Muhasir), more than one narrator narrated from him; al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him and remained silent about him, and he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown status).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over it from Malik bin Mighwal. Ibn al-Mubarak (Abd al-Razzaq 9767) and Salm bin Qutaybah (al-Tabari 3/209) narrated it via Malik bin Mighwal > Ibn Abjar. They dropped two narrators (Abu al-Sha'tha' and Murrah al-Tayyib) from the chain, and this is "i'dal" (two consecutive narrators missing) in the chain.
