Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "extremely feeble" (wahin).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Khalid al-Khuttali: Ibn Mandah called him a narrator of munkar reports. Ibn al-Jawzi (al-Mawdu'at 2/45) said: They called him a liar. Al-Dhahabi said in al-Talkhis: I think Muhammad fabricated it himself. Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 5/11) went too far in saying that this hadith is established and its narrators are well-known figures (a'lam), and that al-Khuttali is alone in narrating it from Kathir. Thus he was certain of its authenticity despite admitting that al-Khuttali is alone in narrating it.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 5/11), Ibn Asakir (30/16) and Ibn al-Jawzi (567, 568) recorded it through various routes from Yusuf bin Muhammad bin al-Hakam with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has also been narrated via Ibn Abi Dhi'b > Muhammad bin al-Munkadir > Jabir through two routes that are not reliable (no cause for rejoicing):
Reference / Source: (1) The first route: Ibn Hibban (al-Majruhin 2/115), Ibn Adi (al-Kamil 5/216), al-Daraqutni (Ru'yat Allah 48), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis (al-Mukhallisiyyat 2931), al-Lalaka'i (Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad 2434), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (Tarikh Baghdad 13/466), Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani (al-Hujjah fi Bayan al-Mahajjah 319), Ibn Asakir (30/160), Ibn al-Jawzi (569) and al-Dhahabi (al-Mizan 3/120) recorded it through various routes via Ali bin Abdah al-Tamimi al-Mukattib > Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan. (2) The second route: al-Khatib (Tarikh Baghdad 13/466), and via him Ibn Asakir (30/160), and Ibn al-Jawzi (al-Mawdu'at 570) recorded it via Abu Hamid Ahmad bin Ali bin Hasnawayh al-Muqri' > al-Hasan bin Ali bin Affan > Yahya bin Abi Bukayr. Both of them (Yahya al-Qattan and Yahya bin Abi Bukayr) narrate it from Ibn Abi Dhi'b > Muhammad bin al-Munkadir > Jabir.
Grading / Criticism: About Ali bin Abdah, Ibn Hibban and Ibn Adi said: "He steals hadith." Al-Daraqutni said: "He fabricates hadith." And al-Hakim said in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sahih" (123): "He narrated in Baghdad a fabricated (mawdu') hadith from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Umawi."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About Abu Hamid bin Hasnawayh, al-Khatib said that he was not trustworthy. We think that Ali bin Abdah's hadith reached Abu Hamid and he grafted it onto this chain. Moreover, we do not know that al-Hasan bin Ali bin Affan heard anything from Yahya bin Abi Bukayr. And Allah knows best.
Details of the narration: There is also a route from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) via Abu al-Zubayr (al-Khatib: 13/117, Ibn Asakir: 30/162, Ibn al-Jawzi: 571).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This route is via Abu al-Qasim Umar bin Muhammad bin Abd Allah al-Tirmidhi > al-Abbas bin Yusuf and Abu Sa'id al-Khallal > al-Hasan bin Arafah > Abu Mu'awiyah > al-A'mash > Abu al-Zubayr > Jabir. About Abu al-Qasim al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Abi al-Fawaris said: There is some concern about him. Al-Dhahabi said: There is weakness in him. We say: He is alone in this route, and the solitary narration of someone like him is not accepted.
Note / Clarification: On this topic there are three routes from Anas bin Malik:
Reference / Source: (1) Ibn Asakir (30/162) recorded it via Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Humayd al-Balisi > Ali bin al-Husayn al-Tamimi > Musaddad and Hudbah > Hammad bin Salamah > Thabit al-Bunani > Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah except Abd Allah al-Balisi and Ali bin al-Husayn; both of them are "majhul al-hal" (of unknown status) and are alone in this route, and their solitary narration cannot be tolerated.
Reference / Source: (2) Ibn al-Jawzi (565) and Ibn Hajar (Lisan al-Mizan 2/365) recorded it via Bunus bin Ahmad bin Bunus > Abu Khalifah al-Jumahi > Ahmad bin al-Miqdam al-Ijli > Yazid bin Harun > Humayd al-Tawil > Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About Bunus, Ibn al-Jawzi said: He is majhul (unknown). Al-Dhahabi said: He fabricated a hadith and attributed it to Abu Khalifah al-Jumahi (this very hadith). Al-Dhahabi mentioned him again in the biography of "Yunus bin Ahmad bin Yunus" and said that he narrated this hadith with a chain of the sahih collections; so he is the one accused of attaching this hadith to Abu Khalifah.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded this narration in "Tarikh Baghdad" (3/675), and via him Ibn Asakir (30/162-163), and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Mawdu'at" (564) narrated it via Muhammad bin Abd bin Amir al-Tamimi, from Abd bin Humayd, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, passing judgement on it, said: "As far as we know, this hadith has no basis among those expert in transmission (the hadith scholars), and (the narrator) Muhammad bin Abd fabricated both its chain and its text."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Khatib quoted al-Daraqutni as saying: "This narrator (Muhammad bin Abd) used to lie and fabricate hadiths." Abu Sa'id bin Yunus said: "He was not praised in hadith" (i.e. he was disapproved of), and he quoted al-Ju'abi as saying: "They used to criticise his hearing (of hadith)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Hibban's "al-Majruhin" (1/143), and via the same route Ibn al-Jawzi recorded it in "al-Mawdu'at" (572) via Muhammad bin Ahmad bin al-Faraj al-Mu'addib, from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Umar bin Yunus al-Yamami, from his father, from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from his father, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban said about the aforementioned narrator Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Yunus: "He narrates inverted (maqlub) reports; we do not approve of using his report as proof when he is alone." Ibn al-Jawzi said: "We think that Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Umar al-Yamami stole this hadith and changed its chain."
Note / Clarification: We say: Abu Hatim and Ibn Sa'id called him a liar, al-Daraqutni declared him "matruk" (one whose hadith is abandoned), and Ibn Adi said: "He narrates munkar and strange reports."
Details of the narration: On this topic there is also a narration from al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) in Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani's "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (3/10-11) via Hamid bin al-Musawir (or Ibn al-Miswar), from Sulayman bin Harb, from Hammad bin Zayd, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam. Abu Nu'aym mentioned Hamid bin al-Musawir in "Tarikh Asbahan" and "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (10/394) and said: "He was known for answered supplications and was among the trustworthy and sincere." But we say that this man is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown status) as regards narrating hadith.
Corroborating chains: He was corroborated by Abu Qatadah Abd Allah bin Waqid al-Harrani in Ibn Battah's "al-Ibanah" (9/722) (and Ibn al-Jawzi recorded it via him in al-Mawdu'at 573), but he narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from "A'ishah" (mentioning A'ishah here in place of al-Zubayr).
Status of the narrator: Abu Qatadah al-Harrani's status is inconsistently reported, and the correct view is what al-Bukhari said in his "Tarikh": "They abandoned him; he is munkar al-hadith."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), which Abu al-Husayn bin Bishran mentioned in his "Fawa'id" (first part, no. 39), and via him Ibn Balban al-Farisi recorded it in "Tuhfat al-Siddiq" (pp. 123-124) via Abu Ubaydah al-Naji Bakr bin al-Aswad, from al-Hasan al-Basri, from Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator in this chain, "Abu Ubaydah al-Naji", was called a "liar" by Yahya bin Kathir and Yahya bin Ma'in, while Ahmad, al-Nasa'i, al-Daraqutni and other imams declared him "da'if" (weak).
Important point: We say: most of the narrators mentioned limited themselves to the final marfu' part of the hadith, which mentions Allah's manifesting Himself (that Allah will manifest Himself to people in general and to Abu Bakr in particular), except "Abu al-Zubayr", who mentioned in his hadith that this happened when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set out from the cave. The same content also came in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and in the narration of Qatadah from Anas. This context differs from what Muhammad bin Khalid al-Khuttali narrated in the hadith of Jabir that is with the author.
