It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been going to appoint a successor, he would have appointed Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as successors.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it!

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Identification of the narrators: Yahya bin Yahya refers to "Yahya bin Yahya al-Naysaburi", Abu al-Umays refers to "Utbah bin Abd bin Utbah al-Mas'udi", and Ibn Abi Mulaykah refers to "Abd Allah bin Ubayd Allah".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (40/24346) narrated this hadith from Waki' bin al-Jarrah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated this in his "Musnad" (1253), and via him al-Nasa'i (8064).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration goes against all of Waki''s students, since it makes it a "marfu'" statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with the wording: "If I were to appoint a successor, I would appoint Abu Bakr or Umar."
Grading: This narration (with Ishaq's marfu' addition) is "shadh" (anomalous, not preserved). The correct version is what Muslim (2385) and al-Nasa'i (8145) recorded via Ja'far bin Awn, from Abu al-Umays, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said that he heard A'ishah being asked: "If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed a successor, whom would he have appointed?" She said: "Abu Bakr." She was asked: After him, whom? She said: "Umar." Then she was asked: After Umar, whom? She said: "Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah." Then she stopped there. (I.e. this is a statement of A'ishah, not a direct saying of the Prophet.)
