Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because it contains Asim (bin Abi al-Najud / Bahdalah), and there is disagreement in the narration from Asim, but it is a disagreement of a kind that does not harm its authenticity.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The details of the disagreement are that Abu Bakr bin Ayyash narrated it with the chain (Asim > Zirr bin Hubaysh > Abd Allah bin Mas'ud), as the author and others mentioned. Ibn Ayyash was corroborated by Sufyan bin Uyaynah, as al-Daraqutni pointed out in "al-Ilal" (711) (although we did not find Sufyan's narration in the sources available to us). In contrast to both of them, Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Utbah al-Mas'udi and Hamzah al-Zayyat (according to al-Daraqutni) narrated it with the chain (Asim > Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah > Ibn Mas'ud) (mentioning Abu Wa'il here in place of Zirr).
General principle: Zirr bin Hubaysh and Abu Wa'il are both eminent and trustworthy students of Ibn Mas'ud, so it is not unlikely that both heard this from Ibn Mas'ud, nor is it impossible that Asim heard this hadith from both teachers. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar pointed to this disagreement in "al-Amali al-Mutlaqah" (pp. 65-66) and "Muwafaqat al-Khubr al-Khabar" (2/435-436) and graded the hadith "hasan", as though he too concluded that this disagreement is not harmful. He said in "al-Amali": "I have not seen in any of its routes an explicit statement that it is marfu' (a saying of the Messenger), although some of it has the ruling of being marfu'."
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musnad Ahmad" (6/3600), but without mention of the succession (appointment) of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi in his "Musnad" (243), and via him by Abu Nu'aym in "Tathbit al-Imamah" (202) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (48), al-Bayhaqi in "al-I'tiqad" (p. 322) and "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra" (49), and al-Hafiz (Ibn Hajar) in "Muwafaqat al-Khubr al-Khabar" (2/435). It was also narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8583) and al-Khatib in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (445) via Asim bin Ali; by Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (862) via Yazid bin Harun; by Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi Umar al-Adani in his "Musnad" (as in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 6372/2), and by Ibn al-A'rabi (again) in his "Mu'jam" (862) and Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm in "Musnad Ibn Wahb" (125) via Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri'; and by al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (105) via Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim.
Details of the chain: All five of these narrators (namely al-Tayalisi, Asim bin Ali, Yazid bin Harun, al-Muqri' and Abu al-Nadr) narrate it from "al-Mas'udi" (Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah), from Asim bin Abi al-Najud, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud.
Important point: In none of these narrators' narrations is there any mention of the succession (istikhlaf) of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (3602) and "al-Kabir" (8593) with the chain Ali bin Qadim > Abd al-Salam bin Harb > al-A'mash > Abu Wa'il > Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. His narration too does not mention the succession of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded it in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (446) with the chain Abu Mu'awiyah > al-A'mash > Malik bin al-Harith > Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid > Ibn Mas'ud, and he too did not mention the succession of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq in his narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): From this evidence it becomes clear that this phrase (about the succession of Abu Bakr) is not a statement of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (rather, it is "mudraj", interpolated). The proof of this is that Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi narrated this report from Abu Bakr bin Ayyash (see Ibn al-A'rabi: 843, Ibn Asakir: 30/294), and he made clear that this phrase is Abu Bakr bin Ayyash's own statement, since he introduced it with: "Ibn Ayyash said: And I say that they (the Companions) saw fit to appoint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as ruler (caliph) after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Note: This phrase will come separately with the author under hadith no. (4526), but there it is from the narration of Abu Bakr bin Ishaq from Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal.
