Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4481

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hantab (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "These two are (to me just like) the hearing and the sight."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is hasan (as al-Dhahabi said in al-Talkhis), and there is disagreement from Ibn Abi Fudayk over this chain, as will come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Dawud al-Qantari narrated it in Abu Bakr al-Qati'i (additions to Fada'il al-Sahabah: 686) and said: "A man narrated to us, he said: Muhammad bin Isma'il narrated to us from al-Hasan bin 'Atiyyah." Thus he agreed with the author's narration in mentioning Ibn 'Atiyyah. Our strong opinion is that the unnamed man here is "Adam bin Abi Iyas" himself, since al-Qantari has narrations from him. As for al-Hasan bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Atiyyah, we have not found (a full) identification of him, but he is not alone in this.
Details of the narration: Thus a group narrated it from Ibn Abi Fudayk and mentioned in it from him that: more than one narrator (ghayr wahid) narrated it to him from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Muttalib:
Reference / Source: Among them (this group) is 'Ali bin Muslim al-Tusi: in al-Baghawi (Mu'jam al-Sahabah 1528), Ibn Qani' (Mu'jam al-Sahabah 2/ 100), al-Ajurri (al-Shari'ah 1322), Abu Nu'aym (Ma'rifat al-Sahabah 2295), al-Khatib (al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq 1079) and Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 115 and 44/ 67).
Reference / Source: And al-Fadl bin al-Sabbah: in al-Baghawi (1528), al-Ajurri (1322) and Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 115 and 44/ 66).
Reference / Source: Likewise Yusuf bin Ya'qub al-Saffar narrated it from Ibn Abi Fudayk (Tuhfat al-Ashraf: 5246).
Reference / Source: And Duhaym and Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri also narrated it from Ibn Abi Fudayk (al-Isabah: 4/ 64).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin Muslim al-Tusi, in his narration, named those (shaykhs) from whom Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated it: 'Ali bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Uthman and 'Umar bin Abi 'Umar. Both of them are unknown (majhul). Some contemporary scholars assumed that the name here is "'Amr bin Abi 'Amr" (the freed slave of al-Muttalib), who is strong in hadith; they were misled by seeing the name corrupted in the printed edition of "al-Isabah". Whereas al-Khatib mentioned him in "al-Muttafiq wa al-Muftariq" in the biography of 'Umar bin Abi 'Umar, stating that five people bear this name, among them this one, and he mentioned no one narrating from him except Ibn Abi Fudayk.
Important point: There is no contradiction between the narration of these narrators and the narration of Adam bin Abi Iyas, so al-Hasan bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Atiyyah is among those from whom Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated this report.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But another group contradicted them, narrating this report via Ibn Abi Fudayk > 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Muttalib (without an intermediary):
Reference / Source: Among them is Qutaybah bin Sa'id (al-Tirmidhi: 3671, Ibn al-Athir: Usd al-Ghabah 3/ 114).

Reference / Source: And Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri (Ibn Bishran: al-Fawa'id al-Hisan 31).
Reference / Source: And al-Mizzi (Tuhfat al-Ashraf 5246) mentioned that Abu al-Rabi' al-Harithi also narrated it like this from Ibn Abi Fudayk.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qutaybah bin Sa'id and Musa bin Ayyub are alone in saying in their narration "from his grandfather, from 'Abd Allah bin Hantab" (with the addition of "from" after "his grandfather"). Al-Mizzi said in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 14/ 435: This is a mistake.
Important point: There is disagreement over which of these narrations is preferable. Abu Hatim al-Razi preferred the narration of Ibn Abi Fudayk from 'Abd al-'Aziz without an intermediary. Whereas Ibn Hajar (al-Isabah) stated with certainty that Ibn Abi Fudayk did not hear it from 'Abd al-'Aziz. The preferred view here is that of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, because the narrators who mention the intermediary are of great standing and they have additional knowledge, so their view must be followed. The intermediaries are a group, though they are not known, but al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Hizami corroborated them (in the narration of Ja'far bin Musafir and 'Abd al-Salam bin Muhammad al-Himsi). However, these two said: from Ibn Abi Fudayk > al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman > al-Muttalib bin 'Abd Allah bin Hantab > his father > his grandfather. Thus they made it a narration of al-Muttalib bin 'Abd Allah > his father > his grandfather, not of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Muttalib. Ibn Mandah (1/ 390) and Abu Nu'aym (2294) recorded it via Ja'far bin Musafir, and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr (p. 188) via 'Abd al-Salam bin Muhammad al-Himsi. Al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Hizami has nothing wrong with him; he is strong in hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "al-Muttalib" mentioned: he is Ibn 'Abd Allah bin al-Muttalib bin Hantab. This is how the genealogists (Ibn al-Kalbi, Mus'ab, al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, Ibn Sa'd and others) gave his lineage. Some attribute him to his great-grandfather, calling him "al-Muttalib bin 'Abd Allah bin Hantab", and this name became so well known that it prevailed. Therefore, apparently the Companion of the hadith is "'Abd Allah bin al-Muttalib bin Hantab", and whoever said "'Abd Allah bin Hantab" attributed him to his grandfather. Al-Tirmidhi declared it "mursal" on the grounds that 'Abd Allah bin Hantab did not meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereas 'Abd Allah bin al-Muttalib bin Hantab stated explicitly in several narrations that he was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said this. That is why Ibn Hajar (al-Isabah 4/ 64) said: "This requires that his companionship be established." We say: Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Hibban and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr affirmed his companionship with certainty, and several scholars (al-Baghawi, Ibn Qani', Abu Nu'aym) listed him among the Companions. All of this refutes al-Tirmidhi's claim.
Important point: If this is correct, a difficulty remains in the narration of al-Mughirah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Hizami, because it requires that the Companion be "al-Muttalib bin Hantab". Ibn Ishaq mentioned al-Muttalib among the captives of Badr who was later released without ransom and then accepted Islam (al-Isabah). In any case, whether the hadith belongs to 'Abd Allah bin al-Muttalib bin Hantab or to his father al-Muttalib, both are Companions. And whether the narrator is 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Muttalib or his father al-Muttalib, al-Muttalib is trustworthy and 'Abd al-'Aziz has nothing wrong with him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some (al-Bukhari: al-Tarikh al-Kabir 3/ 128, Ibn 'Adi: al-Kamil 2/ 438) mentioned this report in the biography of "Hantab al-Makhzumi". Al-Bukhari said: There is doubt about it. What they did is not correct, because they were misled by how well known the attribution of 'Abd Allah bin al-Muttalib bin Hantab to his grandfather Hantab is, as has passed.
Grading: Once we know this, the hadith, with all its routes combined, does not fall below the level of "hasan". And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Moreover, it also has a supporting report from the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (al-Khatib: Tarikh Baghdad 9/ 457, Ibn 'Asakir: 30/ 116). And among supporting reports its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And it is narrated from the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (al-Tabarani, al-Kabir 14506, al-Ajurri 1323, Ibn 'Asakir 30/ 115, 116, 407/ 58) with two chains by which his hadith becomes hasan.
Note / Clarification: It will also come shortly with the author (at no. 4497) from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman, but its chain is "wahin" (very feeble).
