It is narrated from Qays al-Kharifi that he said: I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went ahead of all (in excellence), Abu Bakr came second, and Umar came third. After that, a trial (fitnah) engulfed us, and Allah forgives whomever He wills."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The report is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Qays al-Kharifi (Ibn Sa'd), and he has been corroborated. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri: he is Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr. Yahya: he is Ibn Sa'id al-Qattan. Sufyan: he is Ibn Sa'id al-Thawri. Reference / Source: Ahmad 2/ (1020, 1107, 1259) recorded it via routes from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain. And Ahmad (895) via Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i > 'Abd Khayr > 'Ali. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Khalid bin 'Alqamah corroborated Abu Ishaq (in al-Tabarani, al-Awsat 1639), and its chain up to both of them is "hasan". Reference / Source: Ahmad (1256) recorded it via Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i > al-Aswad bin Qays > 'Amr bin Sufyan al-Thaqafi > 'Ali, and its chain is "hasan". Note / Clarification: The words "wa salla Abu Bakr" mean: he came after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (in second place). This is taken from "al-musalli" among racehorses, which comes after "al-sabiq" (the one in front), because its head is next to the back (sala) of the horse ahead. "Al-salah" means the middle of the back, or the part that slopes down from the two hips.
