Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4459

It is narrated from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri that one day a man gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) a dish made of meat and flour (khazirah) as a gift. With him at that time was al-Harith bin Kaladah, who had knowledge of medicine. When the two of them had eaten some of it, al-Harith bin Kaladah said: In it is a poison that takes effect within a year. By the One in whose hand my soul is! The year had not yet ended when both of them died on the same day at the end of the year.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Uqayl: he is Ibn Khalid al-Ayli. Al-Layth: he is Ibn Sa'd. 'Abd Allah: he is Ibn 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 3/ 182, and via him Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 409) and Ibn al-Athir (3/ 230), from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd Allah al-Uwaysi, and Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani recorded it in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (570) via Hajjaj bin Muhammad al-Missisi. Both of them (al-Uwaysi and Hajjaj) narrate it from al-Layth bin Sa'd with this same chain.
Important point: Despite being mursal, this narration is the most "sahih" of what has been narrated about the cause of the death of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
