Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4448

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I saw in a dream as if three moons had fallen into my chamber. I asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and he said: "O Aishah, if your dream is true, the three best people on the face of the earth will be buried in your house." Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and was buried, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "O Aishah, this (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) is the best of your moons, and he is one of those three."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is sahih (but mursal).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but it is "mursal", because Ishaq bin Musa al-Khatmi narrated it from Sufyan (bin 'Uyaynah) in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" 7/ 261 with wording that clearly shows it is mursal, where he said, narrating from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab: "'A'ishah presented a dream to her father, and he (Abu Bakr) was the most skilled of people in interpreting dreams…" (Sa'id did not state that he heard it from 'A'ishah or Abu Bakr).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Likewise most of the students of Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari) narrated it with wording that clearly shows it is mursal. Among these students are: Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan (Musnad Musaddad, as cited in al-Matalib al-'Aliyah of Ibn Hajar: 2846), Yazid bin Harun (Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd: 2/ 256), Anas bin 'Iyad (Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, as cited in al-Tamhid of Ibn 'Abd al-Barr: 24/ 48 - note: it is not in the Sunan of Abu Dawud or al-Marasil but in some of his other books), Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi (al-Tabarani, al-Kabir: 23/ 126), and 'Amr bin al-Harith (al-Tabarani, al-Awsat: 1373, and Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i, al-Khila'iyyat: 946).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The last part of this report (i.e. the words: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away…" to the end) Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari did not hear from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab. This is indicated by the narrations of Yahya al-Qattan, Yahya bin Ayyub and Yazid bin Harun, in whose narration these words occur: "Yahya bin Sa'id said: Then I heard people talking…" and he mentioned it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Malik bin Anas narrated this report from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari and made the whole of it a mursal report of Yahya, without mentioning Sa'id bin al-Musayyab in it. It is like this in "Muwatta' Yahya" 1/ 232, "Muwatta' Abi Mus'ab" (974) and "Muwatta' Suwayd al-Hadathani" (401). And most of the narrators of the Muwatta' narrated it like this (as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamhid 24/ 47).
Details of the narration: But Qutaybah bin Sa'id (in Abu Dawud, as cited by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr) and Ma'n bin 'Isa al-Qazzaz (Ghara'ib Malik of Ibn al-Muzaffar: 3) narrated it from Imam Malik with mention of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab. However, the "mahfuz" (preserved) version is the narration of most narrators of the Muwatta'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Qutaybah and Ma'n bin 'Isa from Malik came with wording that gives the false impression that the whole of it is connected (as in the author's narration here). Al-Layth bin Sa'd also narrated it like this in al-Baladhuri (Ansab al-Ashraf: 1/ 572).
Important point: Of all these, the "sahih" one is the narration of those who narrated it as mursal and who distinguished between the mursal report of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (which is the first part of the report) and the mursal narration of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari from someone other than Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (which is the end of the report). And Allah the Exalted knows best.
General principle: Furthermore, the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab count among "the strongest of the mursal reports", to the extent that some imams included them among connected reports because of Sa'id's eminence.
Note / Clarification: A narration will come shortly with the author (at no. 8392) via Mas'adah bin al-Yasa' > Malik bin Anas > Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari > 'Amrah > 'A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it Mas'adah is alone in mentioning "'Amrah" in place of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, but this Mas'adah is a "halik" (ruined) and accused narrator.
Reference / Source: The first part of this report is also narrated with another chain in al-Baladhuri (Ansab al-Ashraf 1/ 572) via Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah, and in al-Ajurri (al-Shari'ah 1846) via Hammad bin Zayd. Both of them (Isma'il and Hammad) narrate it from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani > Abu Qilabah 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi as mursal.
Grading: Its narrators are also trustworthy. 'Ubayd Allah bin 'Amr al-Raqqi also narrated it from Ayyub (the 'Ilal of al-Daraqutni: 3729). Hammad mentioned in his narration that Ayyub heard the last part of the report (Abu Bakr's words to 'A'ishah) from Abu Yazid al-Madani as mursal. Abu Yazid is a Tabi'i who settled in Basra, and there is nothing wrong with him (la ba'sa bihi).
Details of the narration: Hammad bin Salamah narrated this report from Ayyub and made the whole of it mursal: Ayyub > Nafi' or Ibn Sirin. Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i (al-Ghaylaniyyat: 33) and al-Tabarani (al-Kabir: 23/ 127) recorded it via him.
Important point: However, the narration of the majority from Ayyub (those mentioned earlier) is more correct. And by the combination of all these mursal reports, the authenticity of this report is confirmed. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
