Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4447

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became gravely ill, we said: O Messenger of Allah, who will offer the funeral prayer over you? He wept and we wept too. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be patient; may Allah forgive you and reward you with the best reward on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me, applied fragrance (hanut) to me and shrouded me, place me at the edge of my grave, then move away from me for a while, for the first to pray over me will be my intimate friend and my companion Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, then the Angel of Death with hosts of angels. After that, let the men of my household be the first to pray over me, then their women, then enter in group after group and one by one. Do not hurt me with the wailing of women mourners, shrieking or lamentation. Convey my greeting of peace to those of my Companions who are not present here. I make you witnesses that I have sent peace upon everyone who has entered Islam and everyone who follows me in this religion of mine from this day until the Day of Resurrection."
The narrator Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Rahman in this chain is unknown (majhul); we know nothing of him with regard to either criticism (jarh) or accreditation (ta'dil), while all the other narrators are trustworthy.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak" and its text is "munkar".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sallam bin Sulaym al-Tawil and Sallam bin Sulayman al-Mada'ini are both weak, but they corroborate each other. 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-Rahman: he is "al-Asbahani" (as his attribution appears in some narrations, and Abu Nu'aym stated it with certainty in al-Hilyah 4/ 168). He is not the "Shami" narrator whom al-Fallas called a liar, as al-Dhahabi assumed in al-Talkhis, on which basis al-Dhahabi judged this hadith to be "mawdu'" (fabricated). Abu Nu'aym mentioned 'Abd al-Malik al-Asbahani in "Tarikh Asbahan" and named among those who narrated from him al-Fadl bin Dukayn and 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Aban, and no criticism or accreditation of him is reported. He is alone in narrating this hadith, and his being alone cannot be accepted. Moreover, there is disagreement over him in its chain, as will be explained.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Ash'ath bin Taliq: apparently he is the "Kufi", not the "Hijazi" whom Ibn Ma'in declared trustworthy. Ibn Abi Hatim (al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil) distinguished between the two, on the authority of his father and Abu Zur'ah. But Ibn Hajar (al-Lisan) said: In my view they are one and the same. What strengthens distinguishing between them is that the narrators in the chain here are Iraqis, whereas in the other chain in which al-Ash'ath is mentioned they are Hijazis. Also, there is disagreement over the name of the Hijazi's father (some said Talq), whereas there is no disagreement over the name of the Kufi's father. If this is established, then al-Ash'ath al-Kufi is "majhul" (unknown).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Apparently it is for this reason, and because of the disagreement in its chain on the part of 'Abd al-Malik, that Abu al-Fath al-Azdi said: His hadith is not sound. Abu Dawud reported in "Masa'il Ahmad bin Hanbal" (1894) that he mentioned this hadith to Imam Ahmad and he rejected it.
Note / Clarification: And now here is the explanation of the disagreement over 'Abd al-Malik:
Reference / Source: (1) Sallam bin Sulaym narrated it from him in the same way as it is with the author (al-Hakim). Likewise Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam (Futuh Misr: 125), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah: 4/ 168), al-Bayhaqi (Dala'il al-Nubuwwah: 7/ 231) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (Mudih Awham: 2/ 145-146) also recorded it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) 'Amr bin Muhammad al-'Anqazi (thiqah) narrated it: 'Abd al-Malik bin al-Asbahani > Khallad al-Saffar > al-Ash'ath bin Taliq > al-Hasan al-'Urani > Murrah al-Hamdani > 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. He added "Khallad al-Saffar" (Khallad bin 'Isa or Ibn Muslim al-'Abdi al-Kufi) to the chain, and put al-Ash'ath first and al-Hasan al-'Urani (Ibn 'Abd Allah) after him.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (3996) and "al-Du'a'" (1219) and said: "No one gave the chain of this hadith in its proper form (jayyid) except 'Amr bin Muhammad al-'Anqazi."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Salamah bin Salih al-Ahmar (da'if) narrated it: 'Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-Rahman > al-Ash'ath bin Taliq > al-Hasan al-'Urani > Murrah al-Hamdani > Ibn Mas'ud. He did not mention Khallad al-Saffar, but he too put al-Ash'ath first and al-Hasan al-'Urani after him.
Reference / Source: Ahmad bin Mani' recorded it in his "Musnad" (al-Matalib al-'Aliyah: 4329/ 1).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Muharibi (strong in hadith) narrated it: Ibn al-Asbahani > Murrah > Ibn Mas'ud. He did not mention three narrators in the chain (Khallad, al-Ash'ath and al-Hasan al-'Urani). Al-Bazzar (2028) recorded it. Al-Bazzar assumed that this Ibn al-Asbahani is "'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah" (thiqah) because the name was not specified, whereas he is "'Abd al-Malik", as specified in the other narrations. Al-Tabarani, after (3996), mentioned al-Muharibi's narration and specified him as "'Abd al-Malik bin al-Asbahani", which is the correct course (al-jaddah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (5) Maslamah bin Ja'far al-Bajali (saduq) narrated it: 'Abd al-Malik bin al-Asbahani > Khallad al-Asadi > 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. He did not mention al-Hasan al-'Urani, al-Ash'ath or Murrah bin Sharahil al-Hamdani in the chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Jarir al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tarikh" 3/ 191-192. In it, the name of al-Tabari's shaykh "Muhammad bin 'Umar bin Hayyaj" has been corrupted into "Muhammad bin 'Umar bin al-Sabbah", and the name "Maslamah" into "Muslim". And he attributed Khallad as "al-Asadi".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd 2/ 224 also recorded this hadith via al-Waqidi > 'Abd Allah bin Ja'far al-Makhrami > 'Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn > Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But al-Waqidi was not corroborated in it, and he is criticised (and abandoned according to some). Moreover, this narration is "mu'dal" (broken) between 'Abd al-Wahid and Ibn Mas'ud.
