Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4433

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the illness in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away began in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he came out with a bandage tied around his blessed head and came (to my house) supported by two men, his feet dragging along the ground. On his right was Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and on his left was another man. Ubaydullah says: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) told me that the man on the left was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith has an authentic chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. I have already mentioned earlier the disagreement of the Companions concerning the age of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of his passing.

Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But this chain is "weak" because Yahya bin al-Miqdam (al-Zam'i) is unknown (majhul). The listing of al-Zuhri's shaykhs in this report came only with this chain, whereas the hafiz narrators among al-Zuhri's students narrated it from him via Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Utbah alone, from A'ishah. Also, Musa bin Ya'qub has some weakness (lin).
Reference / Source: This hadith was narrated in a similar way by Ahmad 40/ (24061) and 43/ (25914), al-Bukhari (665, 2588, 5714), Muslim (418) and al-Nasa'i (7046) by way of Ma'mar bin Rashid; Ahmad 40/ (24013), Ibn Majah (1618), al-Nasa'i (7051, 8886) and Ibn Hibban (6588) by way of Sufyan bin Uyaynah; al-Bukhari (198) by way of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah; al-Bukhari (4442) and Muslim (418) by way of Uqayl bin Khalid; and al-Bukhari (5714) and al-Nasa'i (7046) by way of Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli. All five of these narrators narrate it from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah alone, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But in Abd al-Razzaq's narration from Ma'mar (which is in one of Ahmad's two narrations and in Muslim) it came that one of the two men (who supported the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) was al-Fadl bin Abbas, not his father (al-Abbas). This is a mistake, because all of Ma'mar's other students mentioned "al-Abbas", in agreement with all the other narrations from al-Zuhri.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Ahmad 9/ (5141) and 43/ (26137), al-Bukhari (687), Muslim (418), al-Nasa'i (910) and Ibn Hibban (2116, 6602) narrated it by way of Musa bin Abi A'ishah, from Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Utbah alone, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Details of the narration: In his narration he also mentioned al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, and also that this incident took place when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going out for the prayer.
Reference / Source: Like the narration of Musa bin Abi A'ishah, Ahmad 42/ (25761) and 43/ (25876), al-Bukhari (664, 712), Muslim (418), Ibn Majah (1232), al-Nasa'i (909) and Ibn Hibban (2120, 6873) narrated it by way of al-Aswad bin Yazid al-Nakha'i, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But he did not name the two men.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus the narration of al-Zuhri from Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah bin Utbah differs from the narration of Musa bin Abi A'ishah from Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah and the narration of al-Aswad from A'ishah. Al-Zuhri mentioned in his narration that these two men supported the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was entering the house of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), while the narration of Musa and al-Aswad states that they supported the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was going out of A'ishah's house to the prayer.
Important point: There is nothing to prevent them having done so on both occasions: when he entered A'ishah's house, and then when he went out of her house to the mosque. So there is no contradiction between these narrations.
Details of the narration: But in the narration of Masruq from A'ishah (Ibn Hibban 2118, 2124) it came that he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the prayer supported between Barirah and Nubah. The same came in the hadith of Salamah bin Ubayd (Ibn Majah 1234, al-Nasa'i 7081), except that he did not name Nubah but said: between Barirah and another man. And this Nubah was a freed slave (mawla) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
General principle: Ibn Hibban said after (2119): None of these narrations contradicts another; rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two prayers in congregation in the mosque during his illness, not one; in one of them he was the follower and in the other he was the imam.
