It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Salimah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We lived at a place where people commonly passed by, and the passing caravans would tell us news. We would ask them: "What is this matter (of prophethood), and what is the state of the people?" They would say that there was a man who claimed that Allah Almighty had sent him as His Messenger and that Allah revealed such and such to him. Meanwhile the other Arab tribes had made their acceptance of Islam conditional on the conquest of Makkah, and they would say: "Leave him to his people; if he prevails over them, then he is a true prophet, so believe in him." So when the conquest of Makkah took place, every people hastened to accept Islam. My father too went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the news of his people's Islam. After staying there for some time, he came back and we went to meet him. He said: "I have come to you from the true Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded you with such and such things and said: 'When the time of prayer comes, let one of you give the call to prayer (adhan), and let the one who knows the most Qur'an lead you in prayer.'" When the people looked, they found no one who knew more Qur'an than me, so they put me forward to lead the prayer, while I was only six or seven years old. I used to lead them in prayer, and when I went into prostration my small cloak would ride up. At this a woman of the tribe said: "Cover the backside of your reciter from us." The narrator says: Then a garment made in Bahrain was bought for me for six or seven dirhams and I was clothed in it. Nothing in my life made me as happy as getting that garment.
Imam Bukhari narrated this hadith from Sulayman bin Harb in abridged form, whereas I have presented it here in full detail.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Verification of the text and geography: It came like this in the narration from al-Hakim in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 111) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan" (4/ 5777), and this agrees with the well-known statement in the books of language that "al-mu'aqqad" is one of the cloaks (burd) of Hajar. We say: "Hajar" was in ancient times the name of the region of "Bahrain" (eastern Arabia). In the original manuscripts of the "Mustadrak", "Yemen" is written in place of Bahrain; we think it most likely that this is a corruption of "Bahrain". And Allah knows best.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Identification of the narrator: "Ayyub" is Ibn Abi Tamimah al-Sakhtiyani, and "Abu Qilabah" is Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4302) and al-Nasa'i (1612) narrated it at length through Sulayman bin Harb, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (33/ 20333) from Isma'il bin Ulayyah and (34/ 20685) from Shu'bah; Abu Dawud (585) from Hammad bin Salamah; and al-Nasa'i (866) from Sufyan al-Thawri. Details of the narration: All four of them narrate it from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from Amr bin Salimah, without mentioning the intermediary "Abu Qilabah". Reference / Source: Ahmad (25/ 15902, 23/ 20334 and 34/ 20687) narrated it in very abridged form by way of Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah. And al-Nasa'i (845) also narrated it in abridged form by way of Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal, from Amr bin Salimah.
