Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4411

It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: In the year of the conquest of Makkah, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) halted at Dhu Tuwa, (her father) Abu Quhafah said to his youngest daughter: "O my dear daughter! Take me up onto (the mountain of) Abu Qubays" (and he had become blind). She took him up there, and he asked: "O daughter! What do you see?" She said: "I see a dark mass, and I see a man running swiftly back and forth in the midst of that mass." He said: "O daughter! Those are the cavalry." Then he asked: "What do you see now?" She said: "That dark mass has now spread out." He said: "Then, by Allah, the cavalry have advanced. O daughter! Now take me quickly to my house." She set off swiftly with him until, when she came down into the valley of al-Abtah, there was a silver necklace around her neck, and a man snatched it from her neck. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Mosque, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought his father, leading him by the hand. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "Why did you not leave the old man in his house, so that I could have gone to him myself?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is more fitting that he should walk to you than that you should go to him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him in front of himself, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over his chest and said: "Accept Islam, and you will be safe." So he accepted Islam. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, took his sister by the hand and called out: "I ask, by Allah and by Islam, for my sister's necklace." But by Allah, no one brought it. He called out a second time: "I ask, by Allah and by Islam, for my sister's necklace." But still no one came. So he said (to his sister): "O my dear sister! Seek the reward (from Allah) for the loss of your necklace, for by Allah, trustworthiness has become very scarce among people these days."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Technical note / Verification of the text: Al-Hakim's narration in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 95) came like this, and it agrees with Ridwan's narration in Ibn al-Athir's "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 478). In the original manuscripts of the "Mustadrak" the word is "yasri", but what we have established is more correct.

Technical note / Verification of the text: We have established the word "wa-mudbiran" from al-Bayhaqi's narration from al-Hakim, and it is also established in the narration of Ridwan bin Ahmad from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Ibn Ishaq.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (44/ 26956) and Ibn Hibban (7208) narrated it by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: "Dhu Tuwa": a place in Makkah; it is one of the valleys of Makkah, flowing at the foot of Mount Adhakhir and al-Hajun on the west side.
Note / Clarification: "Abu Qubays": one of the mountains of Makkah, which overlooks the Sacred Mosque from the east.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Abtah": the place where pilgrims used to stop on returning from Mina. It is a part of the valley of Makkah between "al-Munhana" and "al-Hajun"; after it begins the area of "al-Batha'", which extends to the Sacred Mosque.
