Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators, but Muhammad bin Abi Hafsah fell into "error".
Technical note / Idraj (interpolation): His error was that he made it a statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), whereas in reality it is a statement of al-Zuhri, as al-Bayhaqi stated decisively in "al-Dala'il" (5/ 23). The proof is the narration of Ma'mar from al-Zuhri in Abd al-Razzaq (9738) and Muslim (1113), in which the story of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) setting out for the conquest of Makkah is told, and in which the narration of Ibn Abbas (about the setting out) is "separated" from al-Zuhri's statement (about the time of the conquest). Ibn Abi Hafsah "interpolated" al-Zuhri's statement into Ibn Abbas's report, and the author (al-Hakim) here confined himself to that interpolated part alone, which was not well done.
Technical note / Variation in the narration: Moreover, there is also disagreement in transmitting it from al-Zuhri. Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli contradicted Ma'mar (al-Bayhaqi, "al-Dala'il" 5/ 23-24), narrating from al-Zuhri that: "The conquest took place when 13 nights of Ramadan remained". This is a clear difference between the two narrations.
Details of the narration: Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated the story of the setting out through al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah, from Ibn Abbas, and gave the date of leaving Madinah as "10 Ramadan", but this date too is "interpolated" into the narration (i.e., it is not Ibn Abbas's statement), as al-Bayhaqi stated decisively in "al-Dala'il" (5/ 20), citing as evidence the narration of Sadaqah bin Sabiq from Ibn Ishaq, in which Ibn Ishaq gives it as his own statement.
Important point: Al-Bayhaqi is right, because most of al-Zuhri's students (Ma'mar, Uqayl, al-Layth, Ibn Jurayj and others), when narrating this story from al-Zuhri, mentioned neither the date of setting out nor the date of the conquest; so it is established that the date mentioned by Ibn Abi Hafsah and Ibn Ishaq is not part of Ibn Abbas's report but an "interpolation" in it. And Allah knows best.
