Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4407

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: In the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions set out until he camped at Marr al-Zahran with ten thousand Muslims. The tribe of Banu Sulaym numbered seven hundred and Banu Muzaynah one thousand, and in every tribe there was a considerable number and the spirit of Islam. All the Muhajirun and Ansar had gathered with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and not one of them had stayed behind. The news had been kept hidden from Quraysh, so no news of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was reaching them, nor did they know what he (peace and blessings be upon him) was going to do. Meanwhile, Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah bin al-Mughirah met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Thaniyyat al-Uqab, between Makkah and Madinah, and sought permission to come into his presence. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! These are your paternal cousin, your cousin through your paternal aunt, and your brother-in-law." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have no need of them. As for my paternal cousin Abu Sufyan, he has violated my honour; and as for my cousin through my paternal aunt and my brother-in-law Abdullah, he is the one who said to me in Makkah the insolent things that he said." When this news reached the two of them, and Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith had his son with him, Abu Sufyan said: "By Allah! Either the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will give me permission, or I will take this son of mine by the hand and go off into the land until we die of thirst or hunger." When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his heart softened towards them and he gave them permission to come in. Then Abu Sufyan recited these verses concerning his acceptance of Islam and his apology for what had happened in the past: "By your life! On the day I carried the banner of the disbelievers so that the horsemen of al-Lat might overcome the horsemen of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I was like a bewildered traveller wandering lost in a dark night; but now the time of truth has come for me to be shown the way and to be guided. Tell the tribe of Thaqif that I do not wish to fight you, and tell them that this intention of mine is clear to you. I was guided to Allah by the guide whom I had chased away from every place. I used to strive hard to flee far from Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was called (by his name) even though I did not ascribe myself to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). They are a group who, whoever does not speak according to their wishes is blamed and called foolish, even if he is a man of sound opinion. I want to please them, and I am not one to cling to the people unless I am guided in every gathering; and I was not with those who attacked Amir, nor have my tongue and my hand grown weary of any good. The tribes that have come from distant lands, and the troops that have come from Siham and Surdad, and indeed the one whom you drove out and reviled will strive for you with the striving of one who is not sluggish or idle." The narrator says: When he recited before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the line "I was guided to Allah by the guide whom I had chased away from every place", the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him on the chest and said: "Yes! It was you who chased me away from every place." Ibn Ishaq says: The blessed mother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away at al-Abwa' while she was going to visit her maternal relatives among Banu al-Najjar.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith was also the foster brother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), since Halimah al-Sa'diyyah nursed them both, and he was also his paternal cousin. Then he treated the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in an improper manner and satirised him several times, until Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) answered him in his famous ode in which he says: "You satirised Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and I answered on his behalf, and the reward for that is with Allah." This hadith and the ode are lengthy and are narrated in the Sahih of Imam Muslim. Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to satirise Abu Sufyan, but he would not give him permission.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Verification of the text: It came like this in the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr here and in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 73), whereas in the narration of others from Ibn Ishaq it is "Nayq al-Uqab" (the name of a place), and this is correct, as the editor of "Usd al-Ghabah" explained.

Technical note / Linguistic verification: In manuscripts (S) and ('A) this word was corrupted into "bi-lafiz". The correct word is "al-la'it", which means: attached / stuck.

Technical note / Verification of the text: In manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B) this word was corrupted into "Sawdad" (with a waw). We have established the correct word from manuscripts (S) and ('A). According to "Mu'jam al-Buldan", its first dal is read with both damma and fatha (Surdud or Surdad). Al-Suhayli says in "al-Rawd al-Unuf" (4/ 98): "Siham" and "Surdad" are the names of two places in the land of "Akk" (Yemen).

Technical note / Identifying the speaker: The one saying this is "Ibn Ishaq", as al-Hakim's narration in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 28) indicates, and the other narrations of Ibn Ishaq make it clear, where he began by saying: "fa-za'amu..." (they claim) or "fa-dhakaru..." (they mentioned).

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Ibn Ishaq (Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar). And al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar called it sahih in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" (4301).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 27) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim and Abu Bakr al-Hiri, both of them from Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Athir narrated it in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 73, 5/ 145) by way of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (2/ 400) from Ziyad bin Abd Allah al-Bakka'i, and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (8/ 7264) by way of Muhammad bin Salamah al-Harrani; both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq, and it contains additions that are not in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/ 2394) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6231) narrated it by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Details of the narration: Ahmad confined himself to mentioning the halt at "Marr al-Zahran" and the army of ten thousand, while Abu Nu'aym confined himself to the story of Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith and Abd Allah bin Abi Umayyah, and mentioned, for Abu Sufyan's apology, verses other than the verses mentioned here. Both of them also have additions that are not in the author's narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (3/ 49-50) narrated it by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl; Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli in "al-Zuhriyyat" ("Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 4603), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" (3/ 319) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (11/ 145) by way of Abd Allah bin Idris; and Ishaq bin Rahawayh in "al-Musnad" by way of Jarir bin Hazim; all three of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Details of the narration: These narrations do not contain the story of Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith and Ibn Abi Umayyah accepting Islam, nor Abu Sufyan's verses of apology; however, they contain other additions in the story of the conquest.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 3089) and al-Bukhari (4276) narrated it "in abridged form" by way of Ma'mar bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri, mentioning his (peace and blessings be upon him) setting out from Madinah in Ramadan with an army of ten thousand, and this was eight and a half years after his arrival in Madinah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated in "al-Tarikh" (3/ 50) the story of Abu Sufyan and Ibn Abi Umayyah accepting Islam by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl, from Ibn Ishaq, from al-Abbas bin Abd Allah, ... from Ibn Abbas.
Technical note / Break in the chain: Most likely an "intermediary" between Ibn Abbas and the one narrating from him has dropped out of this chain, because Abu Dawud (3022) narrated part of the story of the conquest with this same chain (Ibn Ishaq from al-Abbas bin Abd Allah), but there the intermediary "from some of his family members" is present, then from Ibn Abbas. For this story, Ibn Ishaq had two chains, each of which reaches Ibn Abbas.
