It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sarh hid with Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Uthman brought him and made him stand before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Accept the pledge of allegiance of Abdullah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked at him three times, then turned to his Companions and said: "Was there not a sensible man among you who would have stood up when he saw that I had withheld my hand from accepting his pledge, and killed him?" The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! We did not know what was in your heart. Why did you not signal to us with your eye?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not befitting for a prophet that his eyes should be treacherous, that is, give secret signals."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
