Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4395

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We set off with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Khaybar towards Wadi al-Qura. With him (peace and blessings be upon him) was a slave whom Rifa'ah bin Zayd al-Judhami had given him as a gift. While he was unloading the saddle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) close to sunset, an arrow came from an unknown direction and struck him, and he was killed. We said: "Congratulations to him on Paradise!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not at all! By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the cloak which he took by embezzlement from the common spoils of the Muslims on the day of Khaybar is now burning upon him as fire." On hearing this, a man came in alarm and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I took two straps for my sandals." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two straps like them will be prepared for you in the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. They only recorded the opening part of it through the chain of Malik from Thawr bin Zayd: "We went out to Khaybar, and we did not gain gold or silver as spoils there."

Technical note / Verification of the text: In manuscripts (S), (M), ('A) and in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", the word "li-tuhraq" appears with a single "ta'".

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason the chain is (only) hasan is "Ibn Ishaq" (Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar); he has explicitly stated that he heard it, and there is also corroboration (mutaba'ah) for him.
Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1/ 634-635) and al-Khatib in "al-Asma' al-Mubhamah" (p. 289) by way of Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Mandah (1/ 634-635) narrated it from Ahmad bin Abd Allah bin Ziyad al-Qattan; and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (4/ 356) by way of Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani; both of them narrate it likewise from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham narrated it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (2/ 338-339) from Ziyad bin Abd Allah al-Bakka'i (and by his way Badr al-Din bin Jama'ah in "Mashyakhatuh" 1/ 498, and Taj al-Din al-Subki in "Mu'jam Shuyukhih" p. 247-248); al-Tabari in "Tarikhuh" (3/ 16) by way of Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash; Ishaq bin Rahawayh in "al-Musnad" (533) from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid; and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2733) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd; all four of them (Ziyad, Salamah, Jarir, Ibrahim) narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah narrated it in "al-Musannaf" (12/ 495) (and by his way Ibn Hibban at 4852) through Muhammad bin Fudayl, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Yazid bin Khusayfah, from Salim the freed slave of Ibn Muti'.
Technical note / Variation in the chain: Muhammad bin Fudayl named Ibn Ishaq's shaykh as "Yazid bin Khusayfah", and in doing so he contradicted all the other students of Ibn Ishaq, as you see (the others named a different person). Even so, Ibn Khusayfah is also thiqah (trustworthy).
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4234, 6707), Muslim (115), Abu Dawud (2711), al-Nasa'i (4750, 8710) and Ibn Hibban (4851) narrated it by way of Malik bin Anas; and Muslim (115) by way of Abd al-Aziz al-Darawardi; both of them narrated it in a similar way from Thawr bin Zayd al-Dili.
Important point: It contains an additional benefit: it gives the name of that slave boy as "Mid'am".
Note / Clarification: "Al-shamlah": a cloak with which one covers oneself and wraps oneself up.
Note / Clarification: "Al-shirak": the strap of a sandal that lies on its upper part.
General principle: On the question of Abu Hurayrah's (may Allah be pleased with him) presence at the division of the spoils of Khaybar, one must consult al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 427).
