Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4386

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Abu Layla! Were you not with us at Khaybar?" I said: "By Allah, of course! I was with you." He said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to Khaybar. He marched with the people, and was defeated and turned back."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih through other supports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain has some weakness (lin) because of "Ibn Abi Layla" (Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman), who has poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz). His combining the shaykhs here is a sign of his poor memory. Ibn Abi Shaybah, in "al-Musannaf" (12/ 62-63 and 14/ 464), added a third shaykh, "al-Minhal bin 'Amr", alongside the two shaykhs mentioned, and sometimes Ibn Abi Layla mentions some of them alone in some narrations and separates them; this too indicates that he did not accurately retain which shaykh he heard this report from.
Important point: Moreover, Ibn Abi Layla is alone in mentioning Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) in the narration of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla; no one else mentioned it. Indeed, mention of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is not preserved at all in the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), although his mention is preserved in the hadith of others (such as Buraydah al-Aslami), whose hadith comes next.
Technical note / Textual investigation: 'Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) words in this report, "O Abu Layla", refer to "Abu Layla al-Ansari", the father of 'Abd al-Rahman, not to 'Abd al-Rahman himself, as the narration here gives the impression. The author abridged it in a way that created this ambiguity, whereas what happened was that 'Abd al-Rahman was accompanying his father Abu Layla when they went in to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and 'Ali addressed him (Abu Layla) thus, reminding him of the affair of Khaybar, as the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" makes clear. Since the author abridged the report, he should have mentioned Abu Layla in the chain of his narration.
Technical note / Identification of narrators: "Al-Hakam" is Ibn 'Utaybah, and "'Isa" is Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8345) narrated it by way of 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Hakam and al-Minhal, likewise, but without mention of 'Isa bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/ 778 and 1117) narrated the story of 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and his addressing Abu Layla about Khaybar when he came in to him, from Waki' bin al-Jarrah, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Minhal bin 'Amr alone, but without mention of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (117) also narrated the story from 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah, from Waki', from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Hakam alone, and it too does not mention al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). Likewise al-Nasa'i (8483) recorded the story by way of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); it too does not mention Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and its chain is "qawi" (strong).
Details of the narration: This narration will come through another route from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at no. (1388), mentioning that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Khaybar to fight them and that he returned without victory; but it too does not mention al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
