حدثنا لُؤلؤ بن عبد الله المُقتَدِري، في قصر الخليفة ببغداد، حدثنا أبو الطيب أحمد بن إبراهيم بن عبد الوهاب المصري بدمشق، حدثنا أحمد بن عيسى الخَشّاب بتِنِّيس، حدثنا عمرو بن أبي سلمة، حدثنا سفيان الثَّوْري، عن بهز بن حكيم، عن أبيه، عن جده، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "لَمُبارزةُ عليِّ بن أبي طالب لعمرو بن عبد وَدٍّ يوم الخندق أفضل من أعمال أمتي إلى يوم القيامة" (1).

Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, who narrates from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ali bin Abi Talib's coming out to face (the disbelieving champion) Amr bin Abd Wadd in single combat on the day of the Trench is more excellent than all the (voluntary) deeds of my Ummah until the Day of Resurrection."

(1) إسناده تالفٌ، وذلك من أجل أحمد بن عيسى الخشاب - وهو ابن زيد - فهو متروك وكذبه مسلمة وابن طاهر، وقد حكم الذهبي في "تلخيصه" على هذا الخبر بأنه مُفترى، فقال: قبَّح الله رافضيًا افتراه، وقال الحافظ ابن حجر في "إتحاف المهرة" 13/ 331: هذا خبر موضوع.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "talif" (utterly ruined).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the presence of "Ahmad bin 'Isa al-Khashshab" (who is Ahmad bin 'Isa bin Zayd); he is "matruk" (abandoned), and Maslamah and Ibn Tahir declared him a liar.
Important point: Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi judged this report in his "Talkhis" to be "fabricated" (muftara), saying: "May Allah disgrace the Rafidi who fabricated it." Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (13/ 331): "This report is mawdu' (fabricated)."
