It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "If you have believed in Allah and in what We sent down to Our servant on the Day of Criterion (al-Furqan)" [Surah al-Anfal: 41], that he said: By "al-Furqan" is meant the day of the Battle of Badr, the day on which Allah Almighty distinguished between truth and falsehood.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: (2) This report is hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although 'Ali bin Abi Talhah did not hear from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), as the scholars have stated (and he took the tafsir from Mujahid and Sa'id bin Jubayr), the meticulous scholars of hadith (such as al-Bukhari and Abu Hatim) took his well-known "sahifah" (written collection) from Ibn 'Abbas as proof, because the intermediary between him and Ibn 'Abbas is known. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Amali al-Mutlaqah" (p. 62): "Once the intermediary is known, and it is known to be trustworthy, reliance on it is established. And al-Bukhari, in most of what he quotes definitively as mu'allaq from Ibn 'Abbas in tafsir, relied on this copy of Mu'awiyah bin Salih from 'Ali bin Abi Talhah." We say: 'Abd Allah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth bin Sa'd) is the transmitter of this copy, and more than one person took it from him, so it appears that he preserved that copy accurately. Moreover, this has also been narrated through another route, by way of the 'Awfis from Ibn 'Abbas. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 120) from Abu Zakariyya bin Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki, from Abu al-Hasan al-'Anazi al-Tara'ifi. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (10/ 8) from al-Muthanna bin Ibrahim al-Amuli; and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (5/ 1706) from his father Abu Hatim. Both of them narrate it from Abu Salih 'Abd Allah bin Salih. Also, al-Tabari (10/ 9) narrated it by way of 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi, from Ibn 'Abbas.
