Grading: (3) This hadith is sahih, but with the wording narrated by Sufyan al-Thawri and those who agree with him (as will come). The narrators of this chain are "thiqah" (trustworthy), but there is a disagreement over its wording in the narration from al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir (Ibn 'Abd al-Hamid) and Abu Mu'awiyah (Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir) both narrated it with the wording mentioned by the author (al-Hakim), whereas Sufyan al-Thawri and Dawud bin Nusayr al-Ta'i went against them and narrated it from al-A'mash with the wording: "Seek Laylat al-Qadr on the night of the seventeenth, the morning of Badr." Thus they mentioned that Laylat al-Qadr was the night of the seventeenth, and that it was the day on which the battle of Badr took place. This agrees with the majority of the scholars of the maghazi (the military expeditions), namely that Badr took place on 17 Ramadan. This is the more likely (ashbah) version from Ibn Mas'ud. It is supported by the narration of this hadith by Shu'bah and others from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Hujayr al-Taghlibi, from al-Aswad, from Ibn Mas'ud, since they narrated it with wording that agrees with the wording of Sufyan and Dawud al-Ta'i, as will be explained at the next route. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/ 127) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim, from Abu al-Husayn bin Ya'qub alone, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/ 513), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third volume of his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1442), and al-Bazzar (1622) narrated it by way of Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim, from al-A'mash. Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (7697), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9579) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (4/ 310) narrated it through two routes from Sufyan al-Thawri; and Abu Muhammad Ja'far bin Ahmad bin al-Husayn (known as al-Sarraj) in a juz' of his hadith selected by Abu Tahir al-Silafi (5) by way of Dawud bin Nusayr al-Ta'i. Both of them narrate it from al-A'mash (with this chain), but with the wording referred to just above.
