Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4323

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he met a caravan of Muslims who were returning towards Makkah after trading in the land of Sham. When they heard of the departure of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, they brought white clothes for them. When the Muslims of Madinah received news of the coming of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they would go every morning to the Harrah and wait for him (peace and blessings be upon him) until the heat of midday. One day, when they had returned to their homes after a long wait, a Jew climbed onto a high fortress among their fortresses to look, and he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions in white clothes, shimmering like a mirage. The Jew could not restrain his voice and called out loudly: "O people of the Arabs! Here is that man of yours whom you have been waiting for." So the Muslims took up their weapons, went out and received the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the outer side of the Harrah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) It is sahih, but it is mursal from Urwah bin al-Zubayr, without mention of his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Razzaq (9743) narrated it from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah as "mursal". Likewise Uqayl bin Khalid narrated it from al-Zuhri (Sahih al-Bukhari 3906), and Musa bin Uqbah from al-Zuhri (al-Bayhaqi, al-Dala'il 2/498). However, Ubayd Allah bin Abi Ziyad al-Rusafi (in Ya'qub bin Sufyan, as cited in Jami' al-Athar 5/266-267) contradicted them and narrated it "from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from A'ishah", thus making it part of the Musnad of A'ishah.
Important point / Preferred view: He was not corroborated in this (making it from the Musnad of A'ishah). The narration of Uqayl, Musa bin Uqbah and Ma'mar (in Abd al-Razzaq) is more likely and closer to what is correct. And Allah knows best. And their narration is explicit that the one who clothed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in white garments was "al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam" himself.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Zuhri was contradicted by Hisham bin Urwah, found in Ibn Sa'd (3/158), Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/335) and al-Baladhuri (10/60-61). He narrated from his father (Urwah) that the one who clothed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in white garments was "Talhah bin Ubayd Allah", not al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam. And the narrators of this narration are "thiqah".
Important point / Reconciliation: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in "al-Fath" (11/462) that Ibn Lahi'ah likewise narrated it from Abu al-Aswad from Urwah, and that Ibn A'idh narrated it in "al-Maghazi" from the hadith of Ibn Abbas. He said: "So it becomes necessary to accept both statements as correct."
Note / Clarification: We say: This means that both Talhah and al-Zubayr gave garments as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Among those who narrated that it was Talhah is Musa bin Uqbah (al-Bayhaqi, al-Dala'il 2/498), but he introduced it with "yuqal" (it is said), a form expressing weakness (tamrid). Then Musa bin Uqbah said: "And Ibn Shihab (al-Zuhri) claimed that Urwah said: Al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)… so al-Zubayr clothed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in white garments."
Important point / Critique: On this basis, we do not understand what the justification is for Ibn Hajar's statement that "the scholars of the Sirah hold that it was Talhah bin Ubayd Allah", when we have learned that there is disagreement on this among the scholars of the Sirah themselves. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Clarification: "Al-utum" (with dammah and sukun, or with two dammahs): a fortress or a tall building.
Note / Clarification: "Mubayyidin" (with a doubled ya' carrying kasrah): that is, wearing white garments.
Note / Clarification: "Yazulu bihim al-sarab": the mirage was lifting them up and making them visible (i.e. in the harsh midday sun they appeared to be shimmering because of the mirage).
Note / Clarification: "Zahr al-Harrah": the upper surface of the Harrah. "Al-Harrah" is the land outside Madinah al-Munawwarah where black stones are found in abundance.
