Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) There is no harm in the narrators of this chain (la ba'sa bihim), except Abd al-Malik bin Wahb al-Madhhiji; he is known only in this hadith (majhul al-ayn), and no one besides Bishr bin Muhammad al-Sukkari narrated from him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Also, al-Hurr bin al-Sayyah did not live in the time of "Abu Ma'bad", as al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/84), and he said that Abu Ma'bad was killed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hatim (as his son quoted him in "al-Ilal" 2686) said: "It was said to me that this seems to be a hadith of Sulayman bin Amr al-Nakha'i, because Sulayman bin Amr is in fact 'Ibn Abd Allah bin Wahb al-Nakha'i'; (the narrator) dropped the name 'Sulayman' and made it 'Abd al-Malik' (since all people are servants of Allah), and attributed him to his grandfather 'Wahb'; and 'Madhhij' is a branch of the tribe of Nakha'." Abu Hatim said: "This is possible, because al-Hurr bin al-Sayyah is 'thiqah', and huffaz such as Shu'bah, al-Thawri, al-Hasan bin Ubayd Allah al-Nakha'i and Sharik narrated from him; had this hadith really been from al-Hurr, it would have been the first thing he was asked about, so where were these huffaz regarding it?!"
Grading: We say: If this is established, it means that Bishr bin Muhammad committed "tadlis al-shuyukh" in it, and the said Sulayman bin Wahb is accused of fabricating hadith, so this chain would be deemed fabricated (mawdu').
Note / Research: Although al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted in "al-Isabah" (7/276) that Ibn Khuzaymah graded it sahih, we have not found this quotation with anyone other than al-Hafiz. Perhaps he erred (wahm) in this, intending to mention al-Hakim but (mistakenly) mentioning Ibn Khuzaymah. And Allah knows best.
Important point: The real reliance in this story is on the narration of "Hizam bin Hisham", and a group narrated this report from him, as has passed in the preceding route; and this story is well known among the scholars.
