It is narrated from Sayyiduna Maysarah al-Fajr (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, when were you made a Prophet? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was a Prophet even when Adam (peace be upon him) was still in the stage between the soul and the body."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, and it is supported by the hadith of al-Awza'i, which is as follows:
Hadith Reference
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it at 34/ (20596) via Mansur bin Sa'd, from Budayl bin Maysarah. Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it at 27/ (16623) via Khalid al-Hadhdha', from 'Abdullah bin Shaqiq, from a man who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah!" (and then he mentioned the hadith). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration the Companion is left "unnamed" (mubham), whereas other narrations have named him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators, in narrating it, mentioned "'Abdullah bin Abi al-Jad'a'" in place of "Maysarat al-Fajr". One view is that these are one and the same person and "Maysarat al-Fajr" is his nickname (laqab). Ibn al-Faradi (Abu al-Walid) stated this with certainty (jazm) in his book "al-Alqab".
