Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4229

Kindir bin Sa'id narrates from his father; he said: I performed Hajj in the time of Jahiliyyah, and I saw a man circling the House, reciting these rajaz verses: "My Lord, return my rider Muhammad to me; O my Lord, send him back to me and do me this favour." I asked: Who is this? The people told me: This is Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim. He has sent his grandson Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to search for his lost camels, and whatever task he sends him on, he always returns successful, but this time he has been late in coming. Only a little while had passed when Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived with the camels. Abd al-Muttalib embraced him and said: O my dear son! I have been so anxious about you that I was never so distressed about anything. By Allah! I will never again send you on any errand (alone), nor will you ever be separated from me again.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And the two Shaykhs have agreed, among the blessed names of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on Muhammad, Ahmad, al-Hashir, al-Aqib and al-Mahi.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, the freed slave of Banu Hashim) narrated from a group of Companions, and Dawud bin Abi Hind and 'Asim bin Sulayman al-Ahwal narrated from him. Kundir bin Sa'id, although no one narrated from him except this al-'Abbas, is a senior Tabi'i; it has even been said that he saw the Prophet (ru'yah), and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat." Here he is relating a story about his father. Al-Haythami declared the chain of this report hasan in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" 8/224.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/151 from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd 1/92, Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second volume of his "Tarikh" (869), Abu Zur'ah al-Dimashqi in his "Tarikh" 1/143, Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili (1478), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (978), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (5524), Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" 10/226, Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3257), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 2/20 and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas in "'Uyun al-Athar" 1/47 via various routes from Khalid bin 'Abdullah al-Wasiti, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" 1/82 via 'Ali bin 'Asim, from Dawud bin Abi Hind, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi recorded in "al-Kamil" 2/67 via Maslamah bin 'Alqamah, from Dawud bin Abi Hind, from Bahz bin Hakim, from his grandfather, who said: "I saw 'Abd al-Muttalib circumambulating…" and he mentioned something similar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is munqati' (broken), because Bahz did not meet his grandfather, the Companion Mu'awiyah bin Haydah, let alone his great-grandfather Haydah!
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi gave it a connected chain in "al-Dala'il" 2/21 via Kharijah bin Mus'ab, from Bahz bin Hakim, from his father, from his grandfather Mu'awiyah bin Haydah, who said: "Haydah bin Mu'awiyah went out…" and he mentioned it.
Grading: But this Kharijah bin Mus'ab is "matruk al-hadith."
