حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا أحمد بن عبد الجبار، حدثنا يونس بن بُكير، عن ابن إسحاق، قال: حدثني المُطَّلب بن عبد الله بن قيس بن مَخْرَمة، عن أبيه، عن جده قيس بن مَخْرَمةَ، قال: وُلِدتُ أنا ورسولُ الله ﷺ عامَ الفيل، كنّا لِدَينِ (1). قال ابن إسحاق: كان رسولُ الله ﷺ عامَ عُكَاظٍ ابنَ عشرين سنةً (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and I were both born in the "Year of the Elephant"; we were of the same age. Ibn Ishaq says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was twenty years old at the time of (the war of) Ukaz.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن كما قال الذهبي في "تاريخ الإسلام" 1/ 482. والمطلب بن عبد الله بن قيس بن مخرمة - وإن لم يرو عنه غير محمد بن إسحاق - ذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وقال في "مشاهير علماء الأمصار" (1099): من سادات أهل المدينة. قلنا: وقد تابعه ابن عمه حُكيم بن محمد بن قيس بن مخرمة عند ابن سعد في "الطبقات الكبرى" 1/ 81، وحُكَيم هذا صدوق. وأخرجه أحمد 29/ (17891) من طريق إبراهيم بن سعد، والترمذي (3619) من طريق جَرير بن حازم، كلاهما عن محمد بن إسحاق، بهذا الإسناد. وقال الترمذي: حديث حسن غريب.
Grading: Its chain is hasan, as al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" 1/482.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although no one other than Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated from al-Muttalib bin 'Abdullah bin Qays bin Makhramah, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and said in "Mashahir 'Ulama' al-Amsar" (1099): "He was one of the chiefs of the people of Madinah."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His cousin Hukaym bin Muhammad bin Qays bin Makhramah corroborated him, in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 1/81, and this Hukaym is "saduq."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 29/(17891) via Ibrahim bin Sa'd, and by al-Tirmidhi (3619) via Jarir bin Hazim, both from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: "A hasan gharib hadith."
