Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4221

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father that Abd al-Muttalib related: We went to Yemen on the winter journey, and I stayed with a scholar of the Jews. There a man from the people of the Zabur said to me: O Abd al-Muttalib! Will you permit me to look at those parts of your body that are not 'awrah? He said: Then he opened one of my nostrils and looked, then looked at the other, and said: I bear witness that in one of your hands there is kingship and in the other prophethood, and I see this prophethood in the Banu Zuhrah; how can that be? I said: I do not know. He asked: Do you have a "sha'ah", meaning a wife? I said: Not today. He said: When you return, marry one of these women. So Abd al-Muttalib returned to Makkah and married Halah bint Wahb bin Abd Manaf, from whom Hamzah and Safiyyah were born, and Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib married Aminah bint Wahb, from whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born. When Abdullah married Aminah, Quraysh said: Abdullah has "falaja", meaning prevailed, over his father.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: That is: he succeeded and attained his aim.

Grading: Its chain is very weak because of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran, who is "matruk al-hadith."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri (Ibn 'Isa) also has some softness (lin), but he is corroborated, so the problem remains with the other one.
Important point: However, the marriage of 'Abd al-Muttalib to Halah and the marriage of his son 'Abdullah, the father of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to Aminah are so well known among the biographers that they need no chain (it is an established historical fact).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/106, and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/420, from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain. It was also recorded by Ibrahim al-Harbi in "Gharib al-Hadith" 2/580, Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (1534), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (271), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (2917), Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (71) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1809), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 1/106, Ibn 'Asakir 3/419 and 421, Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" 2/402 and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas in "'Uyun al-Athar" 1/74 via various routes from Ya'qub bin Muhammad, with this chain; except that Ibn al-A'rabi said in his narration "from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn," naming the son instead of his father. Some of them narrated it in abridged form.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of most of them the name of the mother of Hamzah and Safiyyah is "Halah bint Wuhayb" instead of "Wahb," and that is the well-known form, as Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi said in "Jami' al-Athar" 2/410; he said: "bint Wuhayb, and it is also said bint Uhayb." We say: what Ibn Nasir al-Din said is correct, and it is agreed upon by the biographers such as Ibn Ishaq, Ibn al-Kalbi, al-Waqidi, Ibn Sa'd, Mus'ab bin 'Abdullah al-Zubayri, al-Zubayr bin Bakkar and al-Baladhuri.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Nasir al-Din in "Jami' al-Athar" 2/408-409 via Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran, with this chain, but he too said in his narration "Halah bint Wahb"!
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (961) via Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, from Ya'qub bin Muhammad, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Imran, from his father, from Ibn al-Miswar bin Makhramah, from his father, from al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib. Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz has also been criticised.
Details of the narration: This report will come again in abridged form under no. (4958), mentioning the marriage of 'Abd al-Muttalib to Halah bint Uhayb and the birth of Hamzah and Safiyyah from her, via Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani, from Ya'qub bin Muhammad.
