Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4222

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that there was a Jew living in Makkah who traded there. When the night came in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born, he said in a gathering of Quraysh: O people of Quraysh! Has a child been born among you tonight? The people said: By Allah! We do not know. He said: Allahu Akbar! If this news has escaped you, there is no harm, but look into what I am telling you and remember it: tonight the prophet of this last nation has been born. Between his two shoulders there is a mark with continuous hairs on it, like the hairs of a horse's mane. He will not suckle for two nights, because an 'ifrit of the jinn has put his fingers into his mouth and prevented him from suckling. So the people dispersed from the gathering, wondering at his talk. When they reached their homes, each of them told his family, and the families told them that a boy had been born to Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib whom they had named Muhammad. Then those people met and said: Did you hear what that Jew said, and has the news of this child's birth reached you? Then they set off and came to that Jew and told him the news. He said: Come with me so that I may see him. So they went out and took him to Sayyidah Aminah. He said: Show us your son. She brought him (peace and blessings be upon him) out, and the people uncovered his back, and he saw that seal of prophethood. On seeing it, that Jew fell down unconscious. When he regained consciousness, the people said: Woe to you, what happened to you? He said: By Allah! Prophethood has departed from the Children of Israel. O people of Quraysh! You are rejoicing over him; by Allah! He will seize you with a grip the news of which will reach the east and the west. Among those people to whom the Jew said this were Hisham, al-Walid bin al-Mughirah, Musafir bin Abi Amr, Ubaydah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, and Utbah bin Rabi'ah, who was a young man at that time, while others of the Banu Manaf and the rest of Quraysh were also present.
This hadith has an authentic chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And the reports are established by tawatur (mass transmission) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born circumcised and with his navel cord cut. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born in the house in Makkah which is located in the lane known as Zuqaq al-Mudakkak, and I have prayed in it. This is the same house that, after the emigration of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), remained in the possession of Aqil bin Abi Talib and then, after him, with his children.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak, as al-Dhahabi indicated in "al-Talkhis," objecting to al-Hakim's authentication of it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: its weakness is due to Yahya al-Kinani (Yahya bin 'Ali bin 'Abd al-Hamid) being unknown. Nevertheless, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain hasan in "al-Fath" 10/443, although none of Muhammad bin Ishaq's students corroborated this al-Kinani!
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/108 from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 1/162, and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/417, from 'Ali bin Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Abi Sayf al-Qurashi, from Abu 'Ubaydah bin 'Abdullah bin Abi 'Ubaydah bin Muhammad bin 'Ammar bin Yasir and others, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Abu 'Ubaydah is likewise unknown (majhul); indeed, he is not mentioned in any of the books of biographies and history except in this report.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi commented on this statement of the author (al-Hakim) in "Mizan al-I'tidal," saying: "Among his rants is his saying: 'That al-Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) was born with his umbilical cord cut and circumcised is mutawatir.'" And he said in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak": "I do not know it to be even authentic, so how could it be mutawatir?!" Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah" 3/388: "Some claimed that it is mutawatir, and all of this is open to question."
Details of the narration: We say: the report that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was born circumcised has been narrated from the hadith of Anas, al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib, Ibn 'Abbas, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Hurayrah and Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with them). As for the hadith of Anas bin Malik, it has two routes, neither of which is of any value:
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The first is narrated by Sufyan bin Muhammad al-Fazari, in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (6148) and "al-Saghir" (936), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "Tarikh" 2/179 and "al-Muttafaq wa-l-Muftariq" (688), and Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/412 and 412-413, from Hushaym bin Bashir, from Yunus bin 'Ubayd, from al-Hasan (al-Basri), from Anas bin Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the honours my Lord gave me is that I was born circumcised, and no one saw my private parts."
Grading: This narrator, Sufyan al-Fazari, is "matruk" (abandoned).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second is narrated by Nuh bin Muhammad al-Ayli, in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" 3/24 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (91), Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/413-414, and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Mukhtarah" 5/(1864), from al-Hasan bin 'Arafah, from Hushaym bin Bashir, with this chain.
Grading: Al-Dhahabi said about this Nuh in his biography in "al-Mizan" 4/279: "He narrated from al-Hasan bin 'Arafah a hadith resembling a fabrication (mawdu')." Ibn 'Asakir said: "This chain contains some whose condition is unknown, and Ibn al-Jarud (who is a liar) stole it and narrated it from al-Hasan bin 'Arafah." Then he gave it with its chain (3/414) via Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Jarud al-Raqqi, who stole it from Nuh al-Ayli and narrated it from al-Hasan bin 'Arafah; so the hadith is known through Nuh al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of al-'Abbas, it is narrated by Yunus bin 'Ata' al-Makki, in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" 1/83 (and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/411), Abu Nu'aym's "al-Dala'il" (92) and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" 1/114 (and via him Ibn 'Asakir 3/79-80), from al-Hakam bin Aban al-'Adani, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, from his father al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib, who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born circumcised, with his umbilical cord cut." Al-Bayhaqi's narration adds 'Uthman bin Rabi'ah bin Ziyad al-Saydalani between Yunus and al-Hakam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban said about Yunus bin 'Ata' in "al-Majruhin" 3/141: "He narrates strange things (aja'ib); it is not permissible to use him as proof when he is alone in a narration." Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Isti'ab": "The chain of the hadith of al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) does not stand."
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, it is narrated by Ja'far bin 'Abd al-Wahid al-Hashimi, in Ibn 'Adi's "al-Kamil" 2/155 (and via him Ibn 'Asakir 3/411) and Ibn Jumay' al-Saydawi's "Mu'jam Shuyukhihi" p. 336, from Safwan bin Hubayrah and Muhammad bin Bakr al-Bursani, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born with his umbilical cord cut and circumcised."
Grading: This narrator, Ja'far bin 'Abd al-Wahid, is "accused of lying" (muttaham bi-l-kadhib).
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Ibn 'Umar, it is narrated by 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ayyub al-Himsi, in Abu Nu'aym's "Tarikh Asbahan" 1/156 (and via him Ibn 'Asakir 2/414) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Muntaqa min Masmu'atihi" (216), from Musa bin Abi Musa al-Maqdisi, from Khalid bin Ilyas, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born with his umbilical cord cut and circumcised."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ayyub (al-Sakuni al-Himsi) is weak, as stated in "Lisan al-Mizan"; Musa al-Maqdisi is unknown to us; and Khalid bin Ilyas (also called Iyas) is "matruk al-hadith."
Grading: So the chain is "talif" (worthless) and of no value.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it is narrated by Muhammad bin Kathir al-Kufi, in Abu al-Hasan al-Sukkari al-Harbi al-Sayrafi's "al-Juz' al-Thani min al-Harbiyyat" (19) (and via him Ibn 'Asakir 3/411-412), from Isma'il bin Muslim, from al-Hasan, from Abu Hurayrah: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born circumcised.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad al-Kufi is weak, and so is Isma'il bin Muslim (al-Ta'ifi); indeed, more than one scholar abandoned him. And al-Hasan (al-Basri) did not hear from Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Bakrah, it is narrated by 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Uyaynah al-Basri, in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (5821), Abu Nu'aym's "al-Dala'il" (93) and Ibn 'Asakir 3/410, from 'Ali bin Muhammad al-Sulami al-Mada'ini, from Maslamah bin Muharib bin Salm, from his father, from Abu Bakrah: that Jibril (peace be upon him) circumcised the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he purified his heart. Al-Tabarani said: "'Abd al-Rahman is alone in narrating it."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: its chain is a series of unknown narrators: 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Uyaynah is unknown to us; 'Ali al-Sulami is soft (layyin); and Maslamah bin Muharib and his father were given biographies by al-Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim, who were silent about them, and they are both "majhul," although Ibn Hibban included them in "al-Thiqat."
Grading: Al-Dhahabi said about this report in "Tarikh al-Islam" 1/486: "munkar."
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Abd al-Barr narrated in "al-Isti'ab" p. 37 and "al-Tamhid" 21/61 and 23/140 via Muhammad bin Abi al-Sari al-'Asqalani, from al-Walid bin Muslim, from Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, from 'Ata' al-Khurasani, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: that 'Abd al-Muttalib circumcised the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on his seventh day, held a feast for him and named him Muhammad.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He (Ibn 'Abd al-Barr) called it "gharib." We say: its chain contains Muhammad bin 'Isa bin Rifa'ah, who is "muttaham" (accused).
Important point: Imam Ahmad was asked (as in al-Khallal's "al-Sunnah" (202)): "Was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) born circumcised?" He said: "Allah knows best," then he said: "I do not know."
General principle: Had anything about this been authentic in his view, he would have held it. And Allah knows best.
