Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word "aw" ("or") has been wrongly inserted ("fajjan aw hajjan"), which is an obvious error.
Grading: Its chain would be hasan were it not for the 'an'anah of Muhammad bin Ishaq (Ibn Yasar al-Muttalibi), but his 'an'anah is overlooked here,
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: because al-Layth bin Sa'd corroborated him on part of this hadith (in Ahmad 16/(10404), Muslim (155) and Ibn Hibban (6816)), except that al-Layth explicitly named the Tabi'i in his narration as "'Ata' bin Mina'." This supports that "'Ata' the freed slave of Umm Subayyah" is 'Ata' bin Mina' himself, as Abu Bakr bin Abi Dawud al-Sijistani stated firmly, according to what al-Khatib al-Baghdadi quoted from him in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa-l-Tafriq" 1/344. Abu Sakhr Humayd bin Ziyad al-Madani also corroborated Muhammad bin Ishaq on most of the hadith; it was recorded via him by 'Abd al-Malik bin Habib al-Sulami in "Ashrat al-Sa'ah" (39) and Abu Ya'la in his "Musnad" (6584), except that he made it from Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id (al-Maqburi), from Abu Hurayrah directly.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Abu Ya'la, al-Maqburi explicitly stated that he heard it from Abu Hurayrah, so it is not unlikely that al-Maqburi narrated it both ways: once through 'Ata', and once without an intermediary, having heard it from Abu Hurayrah.
