Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4206

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None spoke in the cradle (in infancy) except three: Isa ibn Maryam, the witness of Yusuf (peace be upon him), the companion of Jurayj (that is, the child who testified to Jurayj's innocence), and the son of the woman who combed the hair of Pharaoh's daughter."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how (the number) appears in the manuscripts, although the persons enumerated require it to say "four"!

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but the mention in it of "the witness of Yusuf (peace be upon him)" and "the son of the hairdresser of Pharaoh's daughter" is "shadh." The correct version mentions 'Isa (peace be upon him), the child of Jurayj's story, and another child of the Children of Israel who, while suckling at his mother's breast, prayed against what his mother had prayed for.
Reference / Source: Thus it was narrated by al-Bukhari (3436) from Muslim bin Ibrahim, and likewise by Wahb bin Jarir bin Hazim in Ahmad 13/(8071), and by Yazid bin Harun in Muslim (2550) and Ibn Hibban (6489), both of them (Wahb and Yazid) from Jarir bin Hazim.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The mention of the four (children) listed here has also come through another route from Abu Hurayrah in Abu al-Tahir al-Silafi's "al-Mashyakhah al-Baghdadiyyah," part twenty-two (18),
Grading: but its chain is weak.
Reference / Source: The four are mentioned together in the saying of Ibn 'Abbas, mawquf on him, in Ahmad 5/(2821) with a sahih chain from him. Some narrated it as marfu' (as the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying), as passed under no. (3877),
Grading: but that is not authentic, except for the mention of the son of the hairdresser of Pharaoh's daughter alone, for her story has come as marfu' in the hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentions that on the night of his Night Journey a pleasant fragrance came to him. He said: "I said: O Jibril, what is this pleasant fragrance?" He said: "This is the fragrance of the hairdresser of Pharaoh's daughter and her children." Then Jibril told him her story with her son.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is narrated from Ibn 'Abbas with an acceptable chain (la ba'sa bihi) that "the witness of Yusuf (peace be upon him) had a beard," i.e. he was a grown man (not a child), as al-Tabari recorded in his "Tafsir" 12/195. This confirms the weakness of the marfu' version from Ibn 'Abbas, for had it been established with him as marfu', his statements about it would not have differed. And Allah knows best.
