Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), and al-Busiri declared it sahih in "Ithaf al-Mahara" (5791), as did Ibn Hajar in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (3455). (Identification of the narrator): al-Hakam is Ibn 'Utaybah.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad bin Mani' in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" and "Ithaf al-Khiyarah"), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 22/ 52, al-Husayn al-Mahamili in his "Amali" (in the transmission of Ibn Yahya al-Bayyi') (176), al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" 8/ 66, al-Wahidi in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" 3/ 484, Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 61/ 172, and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" 2/ (611), through two routes from 'Abbad bin al-'Awwam, with this chain.
Details of the narration: This narration is also reported from the hadith of Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) with a different wording, in Ibn Abi Shaybah 11/ 529-530, al-Tabari's "Tafsir" 9/ 73, Ibn Abi Hatim's "Tafsir" 5/ 1573, and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi's "al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah" (686), via 'Umarah bin Abd al-Saluli from Ali. It mentions that "the two sons of Harun were with their father and their uncle Musa when Allah willed to take Harun's soul. When Musa (peace be upon him) learned that the Children of Israel accused him of killing Harun, he said: How could I kill him when his two sons were with me?! Then he said to them: Choose whomever you wish; so they chose seventy men (in the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah and al-Diya': so they chose ten from each tribe)." He said: That is His saying: ﴿And Musa chose from his people seventy men for Our appointment﴾ [al-A'raf: 155]. He said: "When they reached him, they said: O Harun, who killed you? He said: No one killed me; rather, Allah took my soul. They said: O Musa, we will not disobey after today …"
Important point: The narration of Sa'id bin Jubayr is more authentic, and it agrees better with the narration of al-Suddi before this one. In any case, these are mawquf reports containing nothing marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and most likely they are taken from "the People of the Book". And Allah the Exalted knows best.
