Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4154

Al-Suddi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in a report, through Abu Malik from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), through Murrah al-Hamdani from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and from several Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them): Allah Almighty revealed to Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him): I am going to cause Harun to die, so take him to such and such a mountain. So Musa and Harun (peace be upon them both) set out towards that mountain. There they saw a tree the like of which had never been seen, and they found there a built house, in which a couch was laid with bedding on it, and a pure fragrance was wafting through it. When Harun (peace be upon him) saw that mountain, the house and what was inside it, he liked it very much. He said: "O Musa! I would like to sleep on this couch." Musa (peace be upon him) said to him: "Then sleep on it." Harun (peace be upon him) said: "I fear that the owner of this house will come and be angry with me." Musa (peace be upon him) said: "Do not fear; I will deal with the owner of this house on your behalf; go to sleep." Harun (peace be upon him) said: "O Musa! Rather, you sleep with me too, so that if the owner of this house comes he will be angry with both of us together." When the two of them had gone to sleep, the state of death came over Harun (peace be upon him). When he felt its severity he said: "O Musa! You have deceived me." Then when his soul was taken, that house was lifted away, that tree vanished, and that couch was raised up to the heavens. When Musa (peace be upon him) returned to the Children of Israel and Harun (peace be upon him) was not with him, the Children of Israel said: "Musa has killed Harun because he envied the love of the Children of Israel for him." In fact Harun (peace be upon him) was gentler towards them (the Children of Israel) than Musa (peace be upon him) and more restrained from being harsh with them, whereas Musa (peace be upon him) had some harshness towards them. When this reached Musa (peace be upon him), he said: "Woe to you! He was my brother; do you think I would kill him?" Then when they multiplied their accusations against him, Musa (peace be upon him) stood and prayed two rak'ahs, then supplicated to Allah Almighty, and that couch descended until they saw it between the heavens and the earth, and so they believed Musa (peace be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
