Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4152

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Angel of Death used to come to people in visible form (openly). He came to Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him), and Musa (peace be upon him) slapped him and knocked out his eye. The Angel of Death ascended back (to the heavens) and said: O my Lord! Your servant Musa has treated me in such and such a way; were it not for his rank and standing with You, I would have been harsh with him. Allah Almighty said: Go to My servant Musa and give him the choice: either he places his hand on the back of an ox, and for every hair his hand covers he will be given a year of life, or he accepts death now. The angel came to him and gave him this choice. Musa (peace be upon him) asked: Then what will come after that? The angel said: Death. Musa (peace be upon him) said: Then now (let death come). So the angel smelled him once and took his soul, and Allah Almighty restored the eyesight of the Angel of Death, and after that he began to come to people in a hidden way."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. An account of the death of Harun bin Imran (peace be upon him); indeed he passed away before Musa (peace be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) the words are "wa radda Allahu 'alayhi" (and Allah returned it to him), while the text we have established from (S) and ('A) is clearer.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar report was also narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) by Hammam bin Munabbih and Tawus al-Yamani. For this reason Imam Ahmad declared it sahih (as Abu Ya'la al-Farra' quoted from him in "Ibtal al-Ta'wilat" (410) and (411)), and Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli also declared it sahih (as al-Tha'labi transmitted from him with his chain in his "Tafsir" 4/ 46); likewise several later scholars also declared it sahih.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 16/ (10904) from Umayyah bin Khalid and Yunus bin Muhammad al-Mu'addib, and (10905) from Mu'ammal bin Isma'il; all three of them from Hammad bin Salamah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad 13/ (8172), al-Bukhari (unnumbered, following 3407), and Muslim (2372) via Hammam bin Munabbih, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Hammam did not mention in his narration what is in this narration of 'Ammar, that "the Angel of Death used to come to people openly (in visible form)", nor what is at its end, that "after that he began to come in secret."
Reference / Source: Likewise, without these two additions, it was recorded by Ahmad 13/ (7646), al-Bukhari (3407), and Muslim (2372) via Tawus bin Kaysan al-Yamani, from Abu Hurayrah as his own statement (mawquf); but at the end of his narration there is something indicating that it is marfu' (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and it is explicitly stated as marfu' in the narration of Ibn Hibban (6223) and of Abu Abd Allah bin Mandah in "al-Tawhid" (613).
