Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4151

Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Muhammad narrates from his father that he said: The knowledge and wisdom of Allah were among the descendants of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). On this basis Allah Almighty granted Yusuf bin Ya'qub (peace be upon them both) the kingship of the Holy Land, and he ruled for seventy-two (72) years. This is what is stated in the words of Allah Almighty which He revealed in His Book: "My Lord! You have indeed given me a share of sovereignty and taught me the interpretation of events (dreams), O Creator of the heavens and the earth." [Surah Yusuf: 101] Then after that Allah Almighty sent Musa and Harun (peace be upon them both), made them heirs to the easts and wests of the earth, and granted them a pleasant kingship. So Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel with him ruled for eighty-eight (88) years. Then Allah Almighty willed to restore this (kingship) to them, so He made them masters of the easts and wests of the earth and gave them a mighty dominion, until they demanded to see their Lord and said: "Show us Allah openly." [Surah al-Nisa: 153] This happened when they saw that his Lord had spoken to Musa (peace be upon him) and they heard it, so they demanded to see Him. Musa (peace be upon him) had chosen the best of them so that they would testify before the Children of Israel that his Lord had spoken to him. But they said: "We will not testify for you until you show us Allah openly." "So the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on." [Surah al-Dhariyat: 44]
