حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا الحسن بن علي بن عفّان العامِري، حدثنا الحسين بن علي الجُعْفي، حدثنا الفُضَيل بن عِيَاض، قال: كان بين فِراقِ يوسف حِجْرَ يعقوبَ إلى أن التَقَيا ثمانون سنةً (2).

It is narrated from Fudayl bin Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "Between Yusuf (peace be upon him) being separated from the lap (care) of his father Ya'qub (peace be upon him) and their meeting again, there was a period of eighty (80) years."

(2) رجاله ثقات. والصحيح أن المدة كانت أربعين سنة كما قاله سلمان الفارسي فيما سيأتي برقم (8398)، وقاله أيضًا عبد الله بن شداد بن الهاد فيما أخرجه عنه ابن أبي شَيْبة 11/ 82، وابن جَرير الطبري في "تفسيره" 13/ 69، لأنَّ هذا أوفق لما عند أهل الكتاب فيما نقله ابن إسحاق عند الطبري في "التفسير" 13/ 71، وفي "التاريخ" 1/ 364.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Important point: What is correct is that the period was forty (40) years, as Salman al-Farisi said (in what will come later under no. 8398), and this was also said by Abd Allah bin Shaddad bin al-Had, as narrated from him by Ibn Abi Shaybah 11/ 82 and Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 13/ 69.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This view (of 40 years) agrees better with what the People of the Book have, as transmitted by Ibn Ishaq in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" 13/ 71 and in his "Tarikh" 1/ 364.
وأخرج روايةَ الفضيلِ بن عياض ابن جَرير الطبري في "تفسيره" 13/ 70 عن سفيان بن وكيع، عن حسين بن علي، به.
Reference / Source: The narration of al-Fudayl bin 'Iyad was recorded by Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 13/ 70 from Sufyan bin Waki', from Husayn bin Ali, with this chain.
