أخبرنا الحسن بن محمد الإسفراييني، حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن البَرَاء، حدثنا عبد المنعم بن إدريس، عن أبيه، عن وهب بن مُنبِّه، قال: إِنَّ الله بعث شعيبًا إلى أهل مدين وهم أصحاب الأيكة - والأيكة: الشجرُ المُلْتَفُّ. وكانوا أهل كفر بالله، وبَخْس للناس في المكاييل والموازين، وإفسادٍ لأموالهم، وكان الله تعالى وسَّع عليهم في الرِّزق وبَسَطَ لهم في العيش، استدراجًا منه لهم مع كفرهم به، فقال لهم شعيب: ﴿يَاقَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ إِلَهٍ غَيْرُهُ وَلَا تَنْقُصُوا الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ إِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ بِخَيْرٍ وَإِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ مُحِيطٍ﴾ [هود: 84]، فكان من قول شعيب لقومه وجوابِ قَومِه له ما قد ذَكَرَ اللهُ في كتابه (1).

It is narrated from Wahb bin Munabbih (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: Indeed, Allah Almighty sent Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) to the people of Madyan, and they were the Companions of al-Aykah (the dense trees). Al-Aykah refers to dense, intertwined trees. Those people disbelieved in Allah, gave people short measure and weight, and misappropriated their wealth. Despite their disbelief, Allah Almighty had granted them great abundance in their provision and in the comforts of life, in order to give them respite. So Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) said to them: 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no god other than Him. And do not decrease the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, and indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.' [Surah Hud: 84] So what Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) said to his people and the answer his people gave him, Allah Almighty has related all of it in His Book.

(1) هذا الإسناد واهٍ، كما قال الذهبي في غير موضع من "تلخيصه" من أجل عبد المنعم، فهو متروك الحديث، وكذبه الإمام أحمد.
Grading: This chain is "wahin" (very weak), as al-Dhahabi said in more than one place in "al-Talkhis". The reason is "'Abd al-Mun'im", who is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned), and Imam Ahmad called him a liar.
وأخرج مثله الطبري في "تاريخه" 1/ 326 من قول سفيان الثوري.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated something similar in his "Tarikh" 1/ 326 as a statement of Sufyan al-Thawri.
